Ada could still remember the day she came up in the box.
It was like every other special day once a month, the boys were hollering and cheering as the sound of ringing filled their ears. All the Glader's from across the Glade ran up to the edge of the box, peering down into the hole where the box was flying up to. They jeered with each other as one boy leaped down, opening the cage once it reached them and hopping it.
At first the the boy didn't see the figure huddled into a ball with her knees pulled up to her chest in the corner of the cage, it wasn't until he moved around some boxes filled with their monthly supplies did he see the frightened girl with a cut on her chin there. He called out to the boys standing over head, "It's a girl!"
There were many cheers and some shocked yells. She could hear them fussing over what it meant with her showing up in the box. Their laughs only caused her to squirm even more away, but her back already hit the back of the cage, blocking her from running away.
Another boy, with his chin held high and a leader-like stance to his posture pushed through the crowd and offered her a kind reassuring smile and a helping hand. Nick, was his name. He was the First in command, and while she couldn't even remember her own name at first, he had been gracious to place himself between her and the other boys.
Nick made a good first impression on her, so much that she now shuddered with sadness whenever she thought of her old friend who's now dead.
Time couldn't be kept in the Glade, but Ada could estimate it was about a week of her adjusting into the Glade and she tried out all the jobs they had in place. Just because she was a girl, that didn't mean she was going to be treated differently — and thank god for that. She failed miserably at most of the jobs and the boys had fun making snarky remarks and annoying her. It definitely irritated her, but it mostly gave her the determination to get better than them so she can show them she belongs there too.
The boys slowly warmed up to her the longer she stayed, but then she began to get more comfortable and show her true colors which was basically a reality check for the boys that girls were feisty — none of them could remember the last time they knew a female. And boy, did Ada have an attitude to her.
Alby liked to say she was basically a female incarnation of Minho. Perhaps that's why when she tried being a Runner for a day she passed with flying colors, or maybe because she just liked to run. Needless to say, Ada was a Runner from that moment on.
