Not in that way - D. Kaminari x Reader

Denki is feeling a very one sided love, unfortunately on one particular night in the U.A common rooms, he finds out just how one sided it really is.

He watched you with love sick eyes, admiring everything about you, the way your hair curled at the ends. The way there seemed to be such vibrancy in your eyes as you talked about things. He hung on your every word whether it be pro-heroes, your quirk, the things you hated; the things you loved; life. He could listen to you for hours, the way your voice sounded so melodic to him made him rest easy at night.

"Denki you listening?" came your voice, soft and teasing. He grinned, flicking some of his hair out of his face.

"Of course," he responded in his usual nonchalant way. It was killing him. It really was. The way he tried to force himself to listen to your words, sometimes he'd get distracted, looking at your lips move, wanting to know if they were soft, what your lip gloss tasted like. His own tongue darted across his lips. Nervous but you seemed to brush it off.

He relished in secret, in his own mind, as you flipped the hair off of your shoulder, holding up the outfits. He tried not to look at the hem of your shorts that showed off plush looking thighs or the way your jumper seemed to rise so slightly, showing the barest minimum of skin but it was enough for him to feel his heart start racing. He didn't know when he fell, he just knew that one day he saw you as his best friend and suddenly there was a whole future with you playing out in his daydreams. He would never ask you, too cowardly to even say that he needed you, that he was reliant on your company.

"Just go with the one on the left," Denki mumbled, you were torn over two dresses. One that had a cherry print on black fabric and the other was strawberries on white fabric. Either one would've looked great on you. You darted behind your open wardrobe door, undressing, flinging the clothes over the top of the door. Then you appeared a moment later in the cherry print, the small frills coming to rest above your knee. You were adorable but you somehow made it look sexy at the same time.

Denki swallowed, you didn't seem to notice the way he found it almost stifling in this room. You were done moments later, hair half twisted into small pigtails, the rest flowing. He stood, slipping on his own shoes, leaning against the doorway. "Thanks, Denks," you cooed, giving him a hug. He wrapped his arms around you quickly, savouring the scent of vanilla that you wore so well. He found his heart feeling like it was going to sink as you parted from him, leading him out of the door.

You bid him farewell and he watched, wanting to follow you to the ends of the earth.

Time seemed to blur and you spent less and less time with him. You seemed distracted, not coming to him as much so he tried to distract himself from missing you by flirting with other girls. It didn't work, he still fell asleep way too late in the night, thoughts of you staving off his sleep.

He doesn't know how many days were like this, pining over your absence, wondering who you preoccupied yourself with. Though, everything felt like normal when the movie started playing. Whoever decided movie night in the common room was genius, maybe this was the time he could finally ask for your time. Finally confess, brushing his fingers against yours under a blanket, perhaps even going as far as to kiss your cheek. He didn't want to rush, didn't want to make you feel uncomfortable.

Everyone knew that he liked you. You were oblivious as always as you stood in front of him, looking as cute as ever, but your eyes flickered over the room. When they landed on him, he struggled to even breathe. There was something about you, different but it made you almost luminous, your eyes lighting up. His heart fluttered, did you feel the same about him, were you finally realising what he felt for you.

"It's been forever, Kaminari," you spoke. He felt his heart stutter in fear as he heard his last name come out of your mouth. You hadn't called him that in years. It was always Kami or Denks, or even Denki. Never just Kaminari. You flopped besides him. He missed your warmth, the way he just seemed to magnetise to you. It felt like coming home. Sure the both of you were only seventeen but he was damn sure this time that he wanted you and he couldn't see past this feeling.

The words were tingling on the tip of his tongue,a threat to end the relationship you already had and wade deeper into unknown waters. He loved you. There he thought it. He thought those words and he believed that this was definitely what he was feeling. "Who we waiting for?" Momo asked, hands on hips. All of a sudden you were looking around. He couldn't help but notice the sudden worried sheen in your eyes or the way you worried your lip.

Sero, Kirishima, Midoriya and Bakugo were all absent but not for long as they came stumbling through the doors, grumbling, covered in muck. "Sorry for holding you up, not cool of us," Kirishima spoke. They soon got changed and his heart gave a jolt as though he had used his own quirk on himself, seeing you remove yourself from him and bound over to Sero. The way you worried over him fixed his hair.

His heart sank as he himself did to the floor, leaning his back against the sofa, staring at the screen. He could've reached out to grab your wrist, stop you from going over there. He could've told you and everyone else in this room what he felt but he didn't. The movie started playing, some dumb romance. He couldn't help but feel the weight of your decision. It was clear to him now. He wasn't your choice.

He couldn't help but feel the way his stomach seemed to clench as you and Sero cozied up to each other. Whispering and giggling. So he did what he did best, he played it off, stretching and yawning. "Imma head out, not feeling it," he mumbled, disappearing as fast as he could.

"Wait! Kami," your voice seemed to echo behind him. Don't do this to him. He silently begged that you would just turn back, go back to the others, to him. Though it didn't stop him from turning, rubbing away the tear that fell. It felt weird now, the way you looked at him, concerned. Maybe it was misplaced. You held his arm, stopping him from moving.

"It's nothing, you're missing out," he rattled off some semblance of an excuse. You'll never know how he felt. You'll never see what he saw in you. For once in his life, he wanted to space himself from you, mourn the loss of his chance and move on. "I don't believe you," you pushed. Oh how his emotions were doing impossible things and the way he wanted to hold onto the hope that maybe someday you were going to be his.

"Tell me, we're best friends, you can tell me anything," you murmured softly. He couldn't stop himself from the laugh he let out. He was such a fool.

"Best friends tell each other when they have someone," he spoke lowly. The love he felt for you suffocated him, burning him alive with every second he stood in your presence. You looked hurt, then sheepish. "I was going to tell you Kami- wait, why does that even matter?" You had asked him. There it was, in the look that you gave him, the realisation. He didn't know what hurt more, seeing you with someone else or pitying him for loving you.

"Oh, Kami, I'm-"

"I know. You're sorry. You love me but..." he trailed off, looking at Sero. He grimaced, forcing a bright smile, trying to get you to leave, forget it. He tugged his arm away, turning his back on you. "Not in that way."

Note~ Sorry, I'm a bit rusty, I just finished one of my main novels and I've been in a really bad writers block. So I'm trying to pass the time by writing some short things. At least based on songs I'm hearing, just to try and get my creativity flowing again. Thanks for bearing with me :)
