The rain poured down in sheets, blurring the world around them as [Y/N] waited under the lonely glow of a streetlamp.
Her hands were tucked under her arms to keep warm, but the cold seemed to seep straight to her bones.
None of that mattered, though.
She only cared about seeing him—one last time.
When she'd called him, her voice shaky and quiet, Stu had shown up without a second thought. He pulled up to the curb, headlights slicing through the downpour, and for a moment he just sat there, motionless behind the wheel.
She could see his face through the glass, and even though she couldn't see his eyes, she knew he was watching her, taking in every detail, like he was bracing himself.
Slowly, he climbed out of the car, and she bit her lip as she saw him—his messy brown hair soaked from the rain, his favorite flannel drenched and clinging to him.
He looked like someone lost, not the confident, carefree guy who always knew how to make her laugh. Her chest ached at the sight, the weight of her decision pressing down on her.
"Hey," he said, his voice rough and barely audible over the rain. He took a hesitant step forward, uncertainty flickering in his eyes. "You... okay?"
She shook her head, not trusting herself to speak. All the words she'd rehearsed in her head disappeared, replaced by a choked lump in her throat.
She looked away, staring at the puddles gathering at their feet. Anything was better than looking into his eyes, where she knew she'd find that familiar warmth—the same warmth that made her fall for him.
Stu's hands balled into fists at his sides, and she knew he was fighting back everything he wanted to say.
"Look, I know things have been tough," he started, his voice cracking just a bit. "I get it, alright? But we can figure this out. We always do."
She swallowed hard, feeling her heart splinter. She wished it could be that simple, that they could just talk through it, fix things like they always had. But it wasn't just about them. It was about everything else pulling them apart.
"It's not that easy, Stu," she whispered, finally meeting his gaze. "You know what my parents are like. They... they don't understand. They don't want us together."
Stu's expression turned dark, anger flashing across his face. "So what? Who cares what they think? We're not kids anymore, [Y/N]. We're about to graduate. They can't control you forever."
"You don't get it," she shot back, her voice trembling. "They already don't trust me, Stu. They think you're a bad influence. They think you're... dangerous." Her voice caught on the last word, as if even saying it felt like a betrayal.
He flinched, and she could see the hurt in his eyes. "Dangerous?" he repeated, like the word itself was a slap in the face. "Is that what they told you?"
She nodded, her heart breaking with every breath. "They think... they think you'll ruin my future. They want me to focus on college, on leaving this town and making something of myself."
Her voice grew quieter, like a whisper lost in the rain. "They said I'd have to choose between you and them."
Stu's face twisted in frustration, his hands raking through his wet hair. "So that's it? You're just going to let them tell you what to do for the rest of your life?"
"It's not like that," she replied, her own voice shaking with anger and frustration. "They're my family, Stu. They're doing what they think is best for me. And maybe... maybe they're right."
He stepped back, his eyes narrowing as he looked at her with disbelief. "You actually believe that? You think being with me is going to ruin everything for you?"
She bit her lip, guilt flooding her. "No, it's not that. It's just... I'm tired, Stu. I'm tired of sneaking around, of lying to them, of fighting just to be with you. It's like we're always walking on this tightrope, and one wrong step... it's exhausting."
Stu's face softened, and he reached out, taking her hands in his, his touch warm even through the rain. "Then let's run away. Leave this town, leave them all behind. We'll go somewhere they can't find us. You and me. Isn't that what you want?"
She felt the pull of his words, felt the temptation to say yes, to let herself be swept up in his reckless dream. But she knew that running away wouldn't fix anything.
It wouldn't erase the guilt, or the weight of disappointing her family, or the ache of letting go of the life she'd worked so hard to build.
"Stu... I can't," she said, barely able to get the words out. She felt him tense, his hands slipping from hers. "I wish I could. But I can't just leave everything behind. I have a future... they've sacrificed so much for me to have it. I can't throw it all away."
"So you're choosing them over me?" he asked, his voice barely more than a whisper. She could see the pain in his eyes, the heartbreak he was trying so hard to hide. "You're just... giving up?"
Tears filled her eyes as she shook her head. "I'm not giving up. I'm just... choosing the path that makes sense. The path that keeps everyone from getting hurt."
Stu's jaw clenched, and she could see the struggle in his expression, the way he was fighting to hold himself together. "Fine," he muttered, stepping back, his voice hard and cold. "If that's what you want, then go. But don't expect me to just... forget about you."
Her heart shattered as she looked at him, the boy who had once made her feel like she could conquer the world, now staring at her like a stranger.
She wanted to reach out, to hold him, to take back every painful word. But she knew that this was the only way.
"Goodbye, Stu," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the rain.
He didn't reply. He just stood there, drenched and broken, watching her walk away.
And as she disappeared into the downpour, she felt the weight of everything she was leaving behind, the memories, the laughter, the love.
But most of all, she felt the emptiness that would remain long after the rain had stopped, a hollow ache where he used to be.
