It had been a two weeks since Annie showed up on their doorstep, Adam stared at the cup of coffee that he was positive was now stone cold. He hadn't been able to drink it, he was trying to prepare himself to sit across a table from his mother.
Kim found him hunched over the kitchen table, "this sweet girl wants her daddy" Harper extended her arms and reached from him, "you sure you want to do this alone?" The thought of seeing that woman made her physically sick, not only for what she had done to them but what she did to Annie. Kim had really bonded with Annie the past two weeks, she loved having her around. It was nice to have another set of hands especially with Adam back at work, both kids loved her.
Adam helped Harper sit on the table and blew raspberries on her belly eliciting laughter from her, "Darlin', I will be okay. I don't want you anywhere near her" he looked at his watch, "I have to get going, bye princess! He kissed the top of her head as he handed her to Kim.
"Drive carefully, call me as soon as you're finished" she hugged him, "I love you"
"I will, I love you too"
Amy waited for Bob to arrive at the diner, she needed to talk with him. Her initial anger had worn off, more than anything he had hurt her.
She saw him enter, he looked like hell. His usual clean shaven face was filled with scruff, his eyes looked tired and he'd lost some weight.
She stood to greet him, surprising herself when she wrapped her arm around his waist, she knew then what she needed to do.
They broke apart, "Amy, I'm so sorry, for everything" he said as he slid into the booth, "I was an asshole to not tell you about what happened. I was embarrassed and I regretted it from the moment it happened" he wiped the sweat from the glass of water in front of him.
"Bob, you should have told me, I would have been angry." She reached for his hand "but I would have gotten over it, you and Adam meant everything to be back then we would have worked it out"
"What does that mean, are we finished?" Bob asked her, the last two weeks had been a living hell, he missed Amy and Adam was ignoring all of his calls and texts he couldn't bare to lose her.
"Good morning Kim" Annie said as she at on the couch, "Anthony is still asleep?" She pulled the laundry basket closer and started to fold the laundry.
"He is, he was up earlier and went back to sleep" she watched as she folded the laundry, "you don't have to do that, honey"
Annie smiled "oh, yes I do" they had done so much for her, "it's the least I can do, you and Adam have been great to me" she may not have hit the 'parent lottery' but her brother was the best "I'm so lucky to have Adam and you, I don't know what I would have done without you guys" she put a pile of Anthony's clothes on the coffee table "where is Adam anyway, I thought he was off today"
"He is, he had an appointment" Kim told her,"with your mother"
Adam parked the car and made the long walk towards the facility, he had already locked his service weapon in the glove box along with his cell phone neither item allowed in the hospital.
He could actually feel his skin crawl, he felt bad about it but the patients unnerved him, many of them lost in their own world. Though a few of them could be heard yelling out, none of what they said seem to make any sense to anyone else but themselves.
He had to fill out visitor paperwork, and waited to be called back.
"Linda, you have a visitor. Let's go" the nurse said as he opened her door, the door was a privilege she had earned most patients didn't have a door.
