The cruiser roared to life as Rick pulled away from the station. Morgan and Duane shrinking in the rearview mirror until they disappeared entirely. The road stretched out before them, broken and empty, lined with abandoned cars and the remnants of a world they'd both barely begun to understand. For a long time, neither of them spoke. Alyssa sat beside him, her gaze fixed on the horizon, her expression unreadable. She shifted occasionally, glancing at him, as if trying to reconcile the man behind the wheel with the image of the father she'd imagined all her life. For Rick, the silence was heavy, filled with everything he wanted to say but couldn't yet find the words for.
As he drove, he stole glances at her, his mind swirling with a thousand emotions. She looked so much like him—those same piercing blue eyes, the stubborn set of her jaw. How could he have gone seventeen years without knowing she existed? The thought cut deep, a realization that settled into his chest like a wound he couldn't heal.
He thought of all the years he'd missed—her first steps, her first words, the little moments that would've made him a part of her life. He'd spent so long devoted to protecting his family, never knowing there was another piece of him out there, someone he was supposed to protect, to love. And now here she was, beside him, both familiar and utterly foreign.
But it wasn't just Alyssa he was thinking of. Lori and Carl filled his mind as well, their faces flashing in his memory, bringing both warmth and worry. What would they say when he found them—when he brought Alyssa into their lives? He'd always thought of Lori and Carl as his world, his whole reason for fighting. Would they accept her? Would they understand?
Alyssa seemed to sense his thoughts, her eyes flickering toward him, catching his pensive expression. She shifted in her seat, then cleared her throat softly.
"This is... weird, right?" she said, her voice hesitant, as if testing the water.
Rick blinked, surprised but relieved that she'd broken the silence. He nodded, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Yeah. It is. Guess neither of us expected this." He hesitated, searching for the right words. "I didn't know... I didn't know you were out there."
Alyssa looked down at her hands, a faint sadness shadowing her eyes. "I know. Mom... she never talked about you. I only knew your name because... because of her last words." She paused, glancing at him again. "I spent my whole life wondering. Now I'm here, and... it feels like I'm meeting a stranger."
Rick nodded, feeling the weight of her words settle deep within him. "I'm sorry, Alyssa. I wish I'd known. I wish things had been different."
She nodded, giving him a small, tight smile. "Me too."
Silence fell again, but it felt lighter now, as if the shared words had started to bridge the gap between them. They both stared out the windshield, the vast unknown ahead of them, and for a moment, Rick felt a fragile sense of hope, as if maybe, despite the chaos, they could make something of this new, strange bond.
After a long pause, Rick spoke, his voice quiet. "When we find them... Lori and Carl... they'll want to meet you. I know this isn't easy, but... I think they'll understand."
Alyssa didn't answer immediately, her gaze fixed on the road. But eventually, she nodded, a hint of determination in her eyes. "I hope so. And... I hope we find them soon."
Rick nodded, his heart heavy yet steady. They were strangers, yes, but they were family.
Rick glanced down at the dashboard, his heart sinking as he saw the gas warning light flash. They were running low, and in this world, finding fuel was as essential as finding food or water. Up ahead, he spotted a gas station, its sign tilted and weathered, the remnants of a few cars scattered across the lot, some crashed into the pumps or abandoned with doors hanging open.
