The van rattled as it climbed the last stretch of the road, the engine humming with a steady, comforting rhythm. Alyssa sat in silence beside her father, her heart pounding as she looked out the window, taking in the clearing that had come into view. A large RV sat parked at the edge of a modest campsite, where a campfire crackled, casting a warm glow over the figures gathered around it. People milled about, talking in low voices, their faces lit by the firelight. For the first time since the world had changed, Alyssa felt the warmth of community, of a place where people still gathered, still fought to hold on to normalcy.Glen parked the van at the top of the clearing and jumped out, motioning to the others as he headed toward the campfire. Andrea, Morales, T-Dog, and Jacqui all stepped out, greeting the people who rose to meet them, voices filling the air with murmurs of relief and excitement. But Alyssa and Rick remained in the van, each of them feeling the weight of the moment.
Alyssa glanced at her father, sensing the tension in his expression. This was more than just meeting new people. For him, this was a chance—a chance to find the family he'd been searching for since the beginning. Her hand slipped over his, giving him a gentle squeeze. Rick looked at her, his eyes softened with gratitude, and after a moment, he took a deep breath, summoning the courage to step out.
Together, they climbed out of the van, their boots crunching softly on the gravel as they took in the camp before them. And that's when Rick saw him.
Standing near the fire, his face lit by the flames, was Shane—his best friend, his partner, his deputy. The sight of him hit Rick like a punch to the gut. He hadn't seen Shane since before everything had fallen apart, and in the whirlwind of the past few days, he hadn't dared to hope he'd see him again. Shane's expression shifted, surprise and shock spreading across his face as he stared at Rick, the disbelief clear in his eyes.
But Rick's attention shifted in an instant when he saw the figures behind Shane—two faces he'd thought about every day, two people he'd fought to find, to protect. Lori, her face a mixture of shock and disbelief, and beside her, their son, Carl.
Rick felt his heart twist, every emotion he'd buried since waking up in that hospital surging forward. He opened his mouth to speak, but he didn't have to. The moment Carl saw him, his young face lit up, a wide smile breaking through as he cried out, "DAD!"
Carl sprinted forward, his feet kicking up dust as he closed the distance between them. Rick dropped to his knees, his arms wide as Carl launched himself into his embrace, holding him as tightly as if he'd never let him go. Rick's throat tightened, and he could barely breathe as he held his son, feeling the warmth, the reality of him, grounding him in a way nothing else could.
Lori approached slowly, her face a mixture of shock, relief, and something unreadable. Rick rose to his feet, still holding Carl close, his gaze meeting hers. For a moment, they just stood there, staring at each other, each of them searching the other's face as if to confirm this was real.
"Rick..." Lori whispered, her voice choked with emotion.
Rick nodded, his voice thick. "I made it, Lori. I made it back."
They embraced, the weight of the separation, the loss, the fear melting away in each other's arms. For a moment, the world outside faded, leaving only them, a family finally reunited after an unimaginable journey.
Alyssa stood back, her heart pounding, an array of emotions swirling inside her. She watched her father embrace Lori and Carl, realizing she was seeing something she'd only ever imagined—a glimpse into the family she'd never known. It was beautiful, bittersweet, and a little overwhelming.
Shane's gaze flicked over to Alyssa, a flicker of curiosity and wariness in his eyes. He approached Rick, his voice cautious but friendly. "Rick, who's this?"
