As the echo of the retreating truck faded into the distance, an eerie silence settled over the prison yard. The adrenaline slowly seeped away, leaving everyone breathing heavily, glancing around to assess the aftermath. For a brief, surreal moment, it felt as though they'd won, as though they'd managed to push the darkness back, if only temporarily.

But then they saw him—Axel, lying motionless on the ground, a dark red stain spreading across his chest where a stray bullet had struck him. Carol rushed forward, dropping to her knees beside him, her hands hovering uncertainly, as if trying to find some way to help, even though she already knew it was too late.

"Axel," she whispered, her voice choked with grief. She had grown close to him in their time together, found a kindred spirit in his resilience and quiet humor. Seeing him now, lifeless, the cost of the battle they'd just fought became painfully real. Tears welled up in her eyes as she pressed her hands to his chest, as though willing him to get back up.

Rick and Alyssa approached slowly, their faces hardening as they took in the sight. The victory they'd just claimed felt hollow now, weighed down by the loss of one of their own. Alyssa's jaw clenched, her eyes filled with a familiar mix of anger and sorrow. Every battle they won seemed to take something from them, a toll that couldn't be repaid.

"We'll make this right," Rick murmured, his voice low but resolute as he looked at Carol. "The Governor won't get away with this. He'll pay for every life he's taken."

Carol looked up at him, nodding slowly, but the sadness in her gaze didn't fade. She brushed a hand over Axel's shoulder, a quiet farewell to the man who'd been by her side, a comrade in this brutal new world.

The rest of the group gathered around, each of them grappling with their own sense of loss. Glenn wrapped an arm around Maggie, who leaned into him, her face pale. Michonne's eyes were dark, scanning the field, as though preparing herself for the next attack.

Alyssa watched them all, her hands still gripping the AK-47, her face set in a hard expression. She felt the weight of Axel's loss bearing down on her, a reminder of the sacrifices they'd had to make and the toll this fight was taking on all of them. She swallowed hard, standing firm, knowing that this was far from over.

As Alyssa crossed the distance from the main gate  to the tree line, her relief at seeing Hershel, Beth, Carl, and baby Judith safe and sound was overwhelming. She hadn't realized how much she'd been dreading this moment, fearing she'd arrive only to find them hurt or worse. The surge of relief overpowered her, and before she even knew what she was doing, she found herself running straight to Beth.

Without thinking, Alyssa threw her arms around Beth, pulling her into a hug that was far more than just relief. She held on tightly, feeling a warmth in her chest that she hadn't dared to acknowledge before. In that moment, her guard slipped, and the feelings she'd been trying to hide—feelings she hadn't told anyone about, not even her father—bubbled to the surface.

Beth seemed taken aback at first, but then relaxed, wrapping her arms around Alyssa in return. The embrace was comforting, grounding, and Beth smiled softly, seemingly unaware of the complexity of Alyssa's emotions. But Alyssa's heart pounded as she clung to Beth, her mind racing. Only Daryl knew the truth about her, the secret she hadn't yet shared with anyone else in the group—not even Rick, her father, who she had slowly begun to trust. It was still hard to fully embrace that part of herself in front of others, to let them see her vulnerability.

As they pulled back, Alyssa felt a blush creeping up her cheeks, but she managed a small, shy smile. Beth gave her a gentle smile in return, completely unaware of the turmoil swirling inside Alyssa's heart. Hershel observed them with a soft expression, and Carl, holding baby Judith, just looked relieved to see his sister.
