Ugh... I feel myself slowly waking up, dragging my eyes open from the weight of sleep. My bed is so soft and familiar; for a second, I think I'm somewhere else, in some other life. But no—this is home. I sit up and rub my eyes, glancing around. Yeah, this is my room, in Japan. My computer is still on from last night. The screen's dimmed, but I can see the faint, chaotic colors of the game I was grinding, even though the time on the clock says it's way too early for this.
I sigh, turning off the monitor and feeling my body drag itself out of bed. My feet shuffle over the floor, taking me out the door and down the stairs, where I start to smell the familiar scents of breakfast wafting up from the kitchen. As I get closer to the living room, I see my dad and little brother already at the table, eating. My mom's by the stove, still making something, her back turned, humming softly to herself. It's so normal, so ordinary that it feels... off somehow. Why does it feel strange?
"Kazuma..."
As I step into the room, they look up and smile, calling my name. Their voices sound warm, but I can't shake the feeling, that creeping sense that something's... wrong.
Then, before I can even think, I feel the heat. A sudden, all-consuming heat blazes up around me. I whip my head to the side, and the walls, the floor, the very air—everything's engulfed in flames.
The room around me shifts, twisting into a nightmarish landscape of burning wood and smoke. My father's chair collapses in on itself, his figure engulfed by the fire. My brother's voice fades in a strangled scream as he's swallowed by the flames, my mother's humming disappearing as smoke fills the air. I try to move, to run, but the fire surrounds me, trapping me in its vicious grip.
I stumble back, my gaze falling beyond the walls of my home, out onto the world outside. The streets, the houses, the trees, everything in my neighborhood—and beyond it, the horizon, stretching across all of Japan, as far as my eyes can see—is burning.
The entire country is nothing but fire and ashes. I'm frozen in place, the horror searing itself into my mind. Memories flash before me: fragments of laughter, nights with friends, my family, even the late nights grinding at my computer... all of it, gone.

"AAAARRRRGHHHH!!!"
I let out a scream, sitting up so fast I nearly throw myself off the bed. My heart's pounding, the searing images of fire and ashes still flickering behind my eyes. I clutch at my chest, gasping for air. It takes me a moment to realize where I am—not at home, but back in Chaldea. It's the same room I woke up in
"Huff... huff..." I mutter, wiping the sweat from my brow. That dream—it felt so real. The smell of burning, the sounds of my family's voices fading into the fire. Why was I dreaming about them now? And why did everything... end like that? I shake my head, trying to clear the thoughts from my mind.
Just then, I hear a sound. A low, rumbling noise, rhythmic and soft. Snoring? I look over to the couch, squinting through the dim light, and there she is—Aqua, sprawled out, snoozing away without a care in the world. Her hand is still clutching a bottle of alcohol, even in sleep. I gape at her, blinking.
"Where the hell did she get that?" I mutter under my breath, scratching my head. Last I checked, Chaldea's resources were... strained, to put it lightly. Didn't part of the facility explode during that last attack? We barely have enough supplies to go around, let alone luxuries like alcohol. I try to picture the scene in the cafeteria... I thought it had been hit, but did the storeroom somehow survive? Or is she just that resourceful?
Standing up, I notice my clothes—a simple black shirt and white long pants, somehow both comfortable and out of place in this strange, high-tech world. On the chair beside my bed, I spot my Chaldea-issued blazer, folded neatly and waiting for me. I grab it and toss it over my shoulder, glancing back at Aqua, who's still snoring away, completely oblivious.
