"Lying is our defense function. We believe that words will be able to fill all the missing gaps. Liars want to be secretive, but known. People have always wanted to be noticed, to be seen by someone. Our nature is easy. We want to be important, even...

Defense Against the Dark Arts had always been one of the favorite subjects at school for young Riddle. Although the boy thought that the classes should have expanded their scope a bit and had a better name, he liked the subject. Here, practice mattered more than theory, and it was precisely such things that were most useful in life. Defense Against the Dark Arts will be useful to Tom when he will enter adulthood and left the walls of Hogwarts. In real life, he will use spells, not recite some topic from History of Magic or look at the stars. Tom valued subjects that were as interesting as they were useful.
When Tom initially came to Hogwarts, this subject was taught by Albus Dumbledore, but over the years this changed. The wizard changed his professional direction and now taught at the school of Transfiguration and Defense Against the Dark Arts was now taught by a new teacher chosen by the Ministry of Magic. He did not prove to be a very outstanding wizard, but Tom doubted that anyone could beat Dumbledore in magic. The new Professor therefore had a high bar to challenge.
Riddle stood with the other Slytherins on the left side of the class, listening carefully to the teacher as he explained what spells they would be able to use as they dueled each other during several lessons. He warned them to play fair and use only permitted spells and charms. As he spoke his last words, the man looked sternly to the left of the classroom, but none of the students reacted to his stern gaze.
On the right side of the classroom, however, stood students with yellow shades of robes. The sixth year differed from the previous ones in that this year Slytherin and Hufflepuff had not only potions together, but also Defense Against the Dark Arts. Tom somehow clearly did not mind it. Hufflepuff had a similar learning style to Gryffindor, so the whole change did not make much difference to him.
