Trapped in the Dark

The hallway stretched endlessly before them, the walls pulsating with the weight of some unseen force, as if the hospital itself was alive, breathing and watching. Kara and Mia moved quickly, their footsteps echoing against the cold, cracked tiles. The sense of urgency had gripped them ever since Ethan's death-now, only the two of them remained, alone in the maze of darkness and decay.

"We have to get out of here," Kara said, her voice tight with fear. "We can't stay here much longer."

Mia nodded, her face pale and streaked with sweat. She wiped her forehead nervously, glancing over her shoulder as if expecting the horrors of the hospital to spring at her from the shadows. The flashlight in her hand flickered, dimming and brightening erratically, casting eerie shadows that seemed to move on their own.

"Where do we even go?" Mia whispered, her voice shaky. "Every time we try to leave, the place just... changes."

"I know. But we have to try. I don't care if it changes, we have to find a way out," Kara replied, her heart pounding against her chest.

As they turned a corner, the air grew colder, heavier, pressing in on them. The silence was deafening, broken only by the occasional creak of the walls and the distant sound of water dripping somewhere far away. Kara could feel the oppressive presence of something dark, something that had been waiting for them.

They reached another door, one that seemed to lead outside. The light from the flashlight barely reached the handle, but it was enough to make out the old, rusted lock. Kara didn't hesitate. She reached for the door, desperate for any way out of this nightmare.

"Come on, Mia. Help me," Kara urged, but when Mia didn't respond, she looked over at her. "Mia?"

Mia was frozen in place, her eyes wide with terror, staring down the dark hallway they had just passed. Kara felt a sudden chill run down her spine as she followed Mia's gaze. The air around them seemed to thicken, swirling, and the shadows in the hallway began to shift, taking on shapes that didn't belong to the walls.

The sound of something scraping against the floor echoed down the hall, slow and deliberate. And then she saw it-a figure, a shape moving toward them from the darkness. It was hunched, its limbs bent at unnatural angles, its face obscured by tangled, matted hair.

Kara's heart raced. "Mia, move! Now!"

But Mia didn't budge. She stood there, her legs locked in place, eyes fixed on the figure, as if she were hypnotized.

"Mia!" Kara screamed, rushing toward her. She grabbed Mia's arm, trying to pull her away from the creeping figure, but Mia's body was stiff, unyielding.

"I can't move," Mia whispered, her voice a strangled sob. "I can't... I can't leave her..."

Before Kara could ask what Mia meant, the figure stepped fully into the light, revealing its grotesque, twisted form. Its skin was pale and mottled, its eyes black holes in its face, devoid of any humanity. It grinned, a sickly, wide grin that stretched across its face like it had been carved into its skin. And in that grin, Kara saw something-something that made her blood run cold.

It was Lily.

Lily's face was twisted in a cruel, mocking smile. Her eyes, once lifeless, now glinted with malice as she slowly approached them, dragging her feet across the floor with an unsettling screech.

"Mia! Run!" Kara screamed again, shaking her friend's arm harder. But Mia didn't move. Her gaze remained locked on Lily, her body trembling but frozen in place.

"I can't... I can't leave her alone," Mia murmured, her voice distant and hollow.

Kara's mind raced. She couldn't lose Mia, not too. They had to leave, they had to survive. But the figure-Lily-was almost upon them. Kara could feel her heartbeat pounding in her throat, the pressure building in her chest, as if the walls were closing in.

"Mia!" Kara screamed one last time, her desperation rising. But in that moment, Mia turned toward her, eyes wide with terror.

Kara barely had time to react. A sudden, sharp scream filled the air as Lily lunged at Mia, her hands clawing at Mia's throat, her fingers impossibly long, twisted. The grip was inhuman, like the hospital itself had given her strength, a force that held Mia in place with the power of the dead.

"No! NO!" Kara reached for Mia, but her friend's body jerked violently, and the light from the flashlight flickered one last time before going completely dark.

Kara screamed in horror as Mia's body collapsed, lifeless. The lights blinked on again, and Mia was gone-vanished. Only the echo of her scream remained, haunting the air.

Kara stumbled backward, her mind racing, unable to process what she had just witnessed. The hallway was silent again. The shadows loomed larger, pressing in, and the hospital seemed to hum with an insidious energy.

She couldn't stop herself from looking down at the door she had been trying to open. It was now wide open, but it led nowhere.

There's no escape, Kara realized, her breath catching in her throat. The building had already decided who would live and who would die.

Kara backed away from the spot where Mia had fallen, her body shaking uncontrollably. Tears streamed down her face, but she didn't dare turn her back. She couldn't.

Because as she backed away, she could still hear her-Mia's voice, faint but clear, whispering from somewhere in the hospital's depths.

"Help me..."

Kara was left alone, the weight of her fear suffocating her. And then, the voice echoed again, louder this time.

"Help me..."

But no one would come.
