Kara sat in the center of the dark room, her knees drawn tightly to her chest, her arms wrapped around herself like she was trying to hold onto something-anything-that could remind her of the world outside. The hospital, the darkness, the endless cycles of torment... they had worn her down to nothing. She was broken.
She had thought she could fight it. She had tried so hard to escape, to outrun the whispers, the shadows, the ghosts of her friends. But no matter how far she ran, no matter what she did, it was always there. The walls of the hospital closed in on her from every direction, suffocating her, until she felt like she couldn't breathe.
Her life, the life she had known before all of this began, felt so far away now-like it belonged to someone else. A distant memory of a time when things weren't so dark, when she wasn't trapped in this never-ending nightmare.
She had tried. She had fought. But she couldn't escape.
The weight of it all pressed down on her, crushing her spirit, until all that was left was a hollow ache in her chest.
"I can't do this anymore," she whispered, her voice broken, barely more than a breath. "I can't keep fighting."
The room around her felt smaller now. The walls, which had once seemed so far away, were now so close she could almost feel them closing in on her. The whispers were louder, swirling in her ears, making her head spin. They were everywhere. She couldn't escape them. "Join us." The voices sang. "You belong here. You're one of us now."
Kara's hands trembled as she pressed them to her temples, trying to block out the sounds, trying to push them away. But they wouldn't stop. The laughter, the voices, the eternal echoes of the hospital-it was all too much.
She had lost everything. Her friends. Her life. Her mind. She was slipping further away with each passing moment. She was becoming part of the darkness, and it was consuming her. It had already taken her soul.
In the darkness, she could almost see them-the faces of her friends, twisted and broken, their eyes empty, like Lily's. They had become part of the hospital, their bodies just shells of who they once were. And now, Kara was joining them. She could feel it-her mind, her body, her very being-being pulled into the hospital's heart, the place where there was no escape, no light, no hope.
She had tried to fight it, but the hospital had claimed her. She was never going to be free.
Her eyes wandered to the corner of the room, where a sharp object lay discarded. A broken shard of glass from the mirror that had once hung on the wall. It was jagged, the edges sharp enough to cut through anything. Kara's eyes lingered on it for a long time, her mind swirling with the thought.
For the first time since her arrival, she felt a strange sense of calm wash over her. The decision seemed so simple.
All this pain, all this darkness-it would end. She could end it. She wouldn't have to feel the whispers anymore, or the crushing weight of the hospital's cold walls. She wouldn't have to see her friends, forever trapped in the same cycle, the same endless torment.
She reached for the shard, her fingers brushing against its cold surface. It felt like the only thing in the world that made sense, the only thing that could stop the madness inside her mind.
I'm sorry. The thought flashed through her head, a tear slipping down her cheek. She wasn't just leaving this place behind. She was leaving everything-the memory of who she had been, the possibility of what she could have been.
But in that moment, Kara knew she couldn't live in this nightmare anymore. The weight of the hospital's grip on her, the relentless darkness-it had become too much to bear.
The shard of glass felt so real in her hand. The cold against her skin. The sharpness.
With one final, broken breath, Kara lifted the shard.
And then, the door of the room burst open.
Kara froze.
Her breath caught in her throat.
There, standing in the doorway, was Ethan.
He was pale, his eyes wide with fear, but somehow, he was there. He wasn't supposed to be here. He couldn't be. He had died. He had been a part of the hospital. She had seen him... she had seen all of them.
"Kara," he whispered, his voice ragged. "No."
The shard slipped from her hand, clattering to the ground.
Kara's heart raced as she stared at Ethan, unable to believe her eyes. She thought she had lost him forever. She thought she had lost them all.
"Ethan...?" Her voice cracked. "But... you're... you're gone. You're..."
He took a step forward, his face contorted with pain. "I'm not really here, Kara. None of us are. You know that. This place... it doesn't let us go. It's all we know now. But you-you're still alive. You're still you."
Kara shook her head, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. "No. I'm not. I'm... broken. There's nothing left of me anymore. I can't live in this nightmare anymore. I just want it to end."
Ethan's expression softened, his eyes full of pain and sorrow. "I understand, Kara. I know it feels like there's no way out. But you don't have to end it this way. There's always a choice, even here."
Kara closed her eyes, tears streaming down her face. She didn't know what to believe anymore. The hospital had taken so much from her. It had taken her friends, her life. And now, she had nothing left but this hollow emptiness.
"I can't go on like this," she whispered. "Please... I can't."
Ethan knelt down in front of her, his voice soft and steady. "You don't have to do this. Don't let this place win. You're stronger than this, Kara. You always have been."
For a moment, everything went still. The darkness seemed to pause, the whispers quieting as if they were waiting for her decision.
Kara's hand trembled, hovering above the shard on the floor, but something shifted inside her. A spark of resistance. A flicker of something she had almost forgotten: hope.
She couldn't end it this way. She couldn't let the hospital take everything. Not this time.
The tears still flowed, but Kara slowly pulled herself to her feet, wiping them away. She took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the moment. The hospital wasn't going to let her go easily. But for the first time in a long time, Kara realized she didn't have to be a prisoner of it anymore.
"I'm not giving up," she whispered to herself, to Ethan, to the darkness around her.
She would fight. Even if it was just for one more day.
