Chapter twenty-one

The twins had been awake for quite some time already before waking Bill up. They had talked to Ford who told them that he had not succeeded in contacting the oracle, but that he would try again the next night. They then went upstairs together to wake Bill up and untie him.

When Bill woke up he actually felt refreshed and at peace.

„Good morning everyone! What a nice sunny day it is.", Bill said while doing a big stretch. That made Mabel smile a bit, Bill really seemed to adjust. She also said good morning, the others didn't. Ford untied him and they went downstairs for breakfast together. Soos and Melody were already working in the gift shop so they were not with them at the table. Stan had prepared pancakes with syrup while the radio was blasting some 70s music. It was a song from 'Blue Oyster cult', something with reaper in the name. Stan really liked that song and it reminded him of his younger self, traveling through the whole country. When they all came in he turned the volume down a bit but not too much.

To Bill it smelled delicious and he couldn't wait to eat again. His stomach had been rumbling ever since Dipper had woken him up in the early morning so his hunger was really big right now.

„Does anyone want a coffee?", Ford asked. He had big eyebags and looked like he needed at least five coffees to be able to function today. Bill didn't know what coffee was but it sounded delicious so he asked for one too. Ford just shrugged and made one for Bill. The boy was rather confused when he found out that a coffee was something to drink and not to eat but he wanted to try it right away. He put the cup to his mouth and took a big sip. He had to puke it right back into his cup because it burned his whole mouth. They all laughed. „You need to be careful, its hot!", Mabel said while smiling. She loved how clueless Bill was about humanity.

„Yeah, I've noticed...", Bill answered. This time he didn't feel threatened by their laughter. It felt like the Pines were not laughing about him but wanted to laugh with him. He also smiled. Something about today felt really good.

They all ate their pancakes with occasional small talk. Bill drank his coffee again when it was a bit colder and he really liked how it tasted. When they were all finished the kids were assigned to clean up the table and then help a bit in the gift shop. Bill followed every task he was told. This raised suspicion in Ford and Dipper. Stan couldn't care less and Mabel voluntarily stayed around Bill to teach him stuff and help him. When the table was clean they all went into the gift shop. At that point Bill could feel the coffee kicking in, even though he didn't knew it was the effect from the caffeine that made him feel all wiggly and static like he couldn't stop moving. Running on the spot next to Mabel he asked her why he was feeling that way. She also was a bit puzzled but in that moment Ford walked past and explained, as he had heard their conversation and Bills stomps were quite loud.

„It's the coffee. It has caffeine in it that keeps you awake. I was tired so it made me feel better, but you had slept well so when you drink coffee it makes you feel even more awake and energetic. It will wear off in some hours."

Mabel looked at Bill who was nearly shaking from not being able to exercise the caffeine off. If he worked in the gift shop now he would just break stuff again.

„Bill, I have an idea!", Mabel said. „How about we clean up outside a bit?".

Bill didn't care what they did as long as he could move while doing it so he ran outside. Mabel took that as a yes and followed him. It was around 2 p.m. now and it was a nice summer morning, not too hot and not too cold. Slight dew was still on the leaves and the grass. It was going to be a beautiful day.

„So we have wood in the front of the house which we have to carry into the garden.", Mabel told Bill. He tried to focus only on Mabel but it was hard for him to focus only on one thing. Everything was rushing in his brain, his thoughts were fast and loud, he was still jogging on the spot and it felt like his vision was also a lot faster. He nodded even though that was hard to see while he jogged.
