The night settled over the city in a shroud of shadows, hiding the tangled mess of emotions that simmered beneath the surface for Jungkook, Y/N, and everyone their lives had touched.

The week had passed like a dream-heavy, haunting, and full of unresolved memories.

Jungkook's POV

Jungkook sat alone in his office, the faint glow of the city lights creeping in through the window.

His thoughts were not with the files piled on his desk or the phone buzzing with messages from his men. No, his mind was somewhere else entirely.

Every day of her absence gnawed at him, like a wound he couldn't cauterize.

He hadn't felt like this in years, since a different time-a time when he had been less ruthless, less hardened. Since *her*.

His grip tightened on his glass, and he swirled the whiskey inside with barely restrained frustration.

He could still feel the weight of her presence, lingering in his mind even though she hadn't shown up at the office in days.

The calls he'd made to her were hidden under the guise of "urgent work matters," but he knew it was a pathetic excuse.

He had never needed an excuse before.

He closed his eyes, trying to quell the memories of her eyes watching him in silence, her gaze a mixture of worry and resilience that left him unsettled.

He'd noticed the worry in her face, the hesitancy and lingering loyalty that she probably didn't even understand herself.

For her to have that look in her eyes... It was almost as if she'd known him once, truly known him.

"She's just an employee,"

he muttered under his breath.

But even as the words left his lips, they sounded hollow.

He wanted to ignore the way she stirred something deep within him, something he'd long buried, but it was getting impossible.

Y/N's POV

Across town, Y/N leaned back in her chair, staring at the ceiling of her small apartment.

She had forced herself to stay away, to work from home, keeping herself as far from him as possible.

Being near Jungkook-watching him, feeling his presence so close yet so distant-was tearing her apart in ways she hadn't anticipated.

Her thoughts were a mixture of emotions memories of her family that she'd seen for the first time in years, the yearning for the motherly comfort she once had, and the burning ache of the cold gaze Jungkook had given her in the office.

She wanted to pretend it didn't matter, that his indifference didn't cut deep, but she knew it was a lie.

When she felt her phone buzz, she was relieved to see Priya's name.

The two of them had arranged a call after so many years apart.
