January 8th, 2007
First day back.
•••

"Yes You heard me, it's almost that special time of year to celebrate you and your loved one."

I hit the power button on the remote and threw it at the television.

"Hey Harley what was that?" I heard my mother shout from the other room.

I tried to answer without choking on the breakfast I had been eating.

"Nothing!" I murmured sarcastically.

She walked into our kitchen half asleep, dragging her baby pink silk robe across the tile floor.

Looking me up and down, she frowned.

"Are you serious?"

I forced the rest of my muffin down my throat. "What?"

"What the hell are you wearing?" She asked pouring water for her morning cup of tea.

I looked back down at my outfit. "Clothes?"

"Didn't you wear those pants yesterday?" She asked pointing at me with cup in hand.

Rolling my eyes, I jumped out of my stool and walked back to my room down the hall.

There were clothes everywhere. Every inch of my hard wood floor was hidden by black leggings and graphic tee shirts.

I don't think I've ever even touched the keyboard in the corner. As for now I use it as a shelf.

I picked the least faded black jeans I could find and threw them on.

They had a few rips towards the bottom but they seemed okay for the walk to school.

I grabbed my hoodie off of my bed and set the ukulele that had been hiding under up on my windowsill.

On the way out, I put a bit of mascara on just as a touch up in the mirror we hung in the hallway.

Right as I was about to walk away my mother stopped me.

"Fix your hair."

Watching her walk into the bathroom, I covered my head with my hood.

I checked my pockets making sure I had my phone and a few dollars to buy lunch.

"Harley, you're going to be late." I heard my mother slur. I could tell she was fixing an extra coat of lipstick on before work.

"But it's 7:45. School doesn't start until 8:30"

She walked back out into the hall to change her shirt. "If you're walking, you won't get there until the bell rings.."

I reassured her with a small hug. "Mom, you don't have to stress."

She gave me an odd glare as I pulled away, but touched up with a smirk and walked into her room.

"Okay, just don't get in trouble." She said peeking her head out.

I laughed under my breath and smirked, "I won't."

Walking over to the front door, I grabbed my bag off of the counter and whistled some silly melody I probably heard on the radio and threw my phone in the side pocket.

I slowly opened the door as I heard my mother yell, "Love you baby!"

I turned my head back and shouted, "Love you too!"

Shutting the door behind me, I put my sunglasses on and shoved my earbuds in, blocking out the world around me.

* * * *

My mother and I's apartment complex wasn't too far from my school, but I have to admit, it was a walk.

I used to pass by the same houses, the same people, the same street names everyday.

Coming back to this was kinda strange, but I knew I'd get used to it.

I missed the smell of the misty air I had the privilege of breathing in the mornings.

The fresh air that wakes you up in the best way.

Winter was almost at its end.

To be honest, I'm not really looking forward to Spring.

I'm not the kind of person who likes tanning and laying in the sun.

I swear I'm not a vampire.
God I wish I was..

"Harley?!"

I heard a familiar voice through the music.

I pulled out my earbuds and looked back.

Standing behind me I saw a girl with bright purple hair and beautiful grey eyes.

"Halsey..?" I asked. Unsure of who was there.

She started to tear up.

"Yeah." She giggled.

I ran up and hugged her tight.

I started sobbing and laughing at the same time.

"What are you doing here so early?" I asked.

She pulled away and cleared off her tear soaked face.

"Uhm.. Brendon gave me a ride. He's inside working."

Smiling, I sniffled."Oh."

"Yeah." She whispered.

I sat down near the edge of the school wall.
"So how's it going?" I ask.

Halsey sat down beside me. "All good.."

I looked at her face. "You sure..?"

She nodded and smiled faintly, avoiding eye contact.

"But what about you? How did everything go?"

I looked off into the distance and nodded. "Good."

She smiled. "Cool."

The conversation grew into an awkward silence.

"Hey!! Harley! You're back!"

I tilted my head up and saw a tall figure in the fog.

"Brendon?"

He answered. "Yeah!"

I stood up and gave him a faint hug.

He put his arm around Halsey and kissed her cheek.

Biting the inside of my mouth, I smiled.

"Well I'm glad you're back. And I'm glad you're safe." She said giving me another hug.

I kept smiling watched her walk away with Brendon.

I whispered under my breath, "me too.."
