I cried out while I stumbled back.
"Where have I seen this before?" he asked in a cruel tone, walking towards me with the knife.
My mind reeled. I didn't know what Miles meant.
"He had the same fear in his eyes," he sneered.
"W-who are you talking about?" I struggled.
"Your brother, Jace," Miles hissed, his eyes glinting with malice.
"He had that exact look of terror in his eyes." I froze, my blood turning to ice.
"What are you saying?" I whispered, my voice barely audible.
"My brother died in a car crash. How could you see the look in his eyes?..."
Miles' grip tightened, a twisted smile spreading across his face.
"Your precious brother didn't die in that car crash. I made sure of that."
I felt the blood drain from my face as the truth sank in,
"No... no, that can't be true," I protested weakly, "Jace... he was my brother, he was..."
But Miles's laughter cut through my protests, a cruel reminder of the nightmare unfolding before me.
"He was nothing but a burden," he sneered, his words laced with venom.
"But he's gone now, all thanks to me."
Tears welled up in my eyes as the weight of Miles's betrayal pressed down on me,
"You... you killed him?" I whispered, the words barely escaping my trembling lips.
"It was nothing personal, sweetheart, he got in the way. He was going to expose everything. I killed Riley and my friend in that crash, he was going to tell. I needed him to be quiet"
A surge of nausea hit me, my knees nearly buckling.
"What did he ever do to you?" I cried out.
"You're a monster, you killed him" I spat.
Miles' expression darkened.
"Killed? That's a strong word, Avery. He's a lost soul now, wandering without his memories. He doesn't even remember who he. It's over, Avery. He can't save you."
Tears blurred my vision, rage mixing with desperation.
"You mean he's alive?"
I think it was just some false hope I had, but maybe Jace survived Miles' attack. Jace was always so strong.
Miles gave me a sinister smile,
"Oh yes, Avery, he's alive, but he's not the brother you once knew. He has not a single memory of you or his past."
"You're wrong," I said, my voice stronger than before.
"Jace would never forget me. He promised he'd come back for me. He'd never break that promise.
"Promises mean nothing when you can't remember them. You see, I made sure he'd forget about everything. All those memories of you were gone in an instant. He doesn't remember who he is to you, he let you alone" Miles said coldly.
Jace, wherever you are, please come back like you promised. I need you.
I sobbed, clinging to the hope that he could somehow hear me.
"I want Jace..." I cried out, the words tearing from my throat.
"Please, tell me where he is" I begged.
"Oh, don't worry, Avery. Jace has been with you all along, and you didn't even know it, you've been calling your brother by the wrong name all along sweetheart"
''What? I don't understand''
''Should I tell you my little secret? The real Thomas died, I killed him the night of the crash. Your goddamn brother Jace is the one who survived my attack, but he lost his entire memory. That's how I could lie to him, make him believe he was Thomas. It was the perfect cover, and he never questioned it."
And then everything made sense.
Thomas...Jace, they were one and the same.
The truth hit me like a tidal wave...
"Thomas is Jace..." I whisper to myself but it was loud enough for Miles to hear it.
"It doesn't matter anymore, Avery. This is the end for the both of you"
Miles got closer and there was nowhere to run now.
I glanced over at Jace for one more time,
"Jace, wake up please" I cried out.
Breathing was getting harder and harder.
In my blurry vision I saw how Jace was slowly pushing himself up.
With every breath I had left I choked out his name
"Jace..." hoping to reach the part of him that remembers, the part that was my brother.
He ran to Miles and knocked Miles of me.
I gasped, Miles was lying on the floor.
Unconscious , but still alive.
