I turn my wrist to check the date and time of day on my watch. It's 3:45 p.m., Wednesday, September 28th. I am reading at The Hive coffee shop like I do every day after school and before my shift at the bookshop. I chose to read Romeo and Juliet, despite reading it many times before. I feel nostalgic today.
I'm wearing my cute green private school uniform, except for the ugly jacket they make us wear, I always take it off when I have the chance. And I'm wearing my white Chanel earmuffs, not because I'm cold, but because I'd rather not hear people's conversations nearby. However in this case I am also blocking out a pesky waiter trying to get my attention.
"Miss. Miss?" The waiter says, increasing his tone. "Hmm?" I answer, pulling off my earmuffs. "If you are done with your food, you can't occupy a seat." He tells me, nodding towards the empty tea cup and plate. "I'm still working on my food," I say, resuming my reading. "It's empty." The waiter persists. I pick up a crumb from where my scone once was. "Look. There's still food left." I say, glaring at him. "No, you really can't be doing that I-"
Before he can continue, a boy speaks up from the table next to me. "I was just getting her food." He reaches over to place a donut on the plate. He takes out his wallet, puts the money in the check lying in front of him, and places it gently in the waiter's hands, folding his fingers over the check for him. "Keep the change." I look at the check In the waiter's hands, surprised. "Um, thank you miste-" but the boy was already out the door.
I quit watching him as he walked off. I looked at my watch and as I thought, I was already late for my shift. I pay quickly and bolt out of the cafe. I've been working at the bookstore for a few years now, but I've grown up here. I just like to be around books, but since my sophomore year of high school, the owner insisted that I be paid. The owner, Rose, has known me since I was five because I would come into her bookstore every day after school and sit on the soft carpet, looking at all the books or reading one I had gotten on my previous trip there.
Rose offered one day for me to work there whenever I wanted to, which is every day. I let my thoughts flow through my brain as I walk to the bookshop and push them to my subconscious once I am at the door. The familiar sound of the doorbell chimes as I open the arched wooden double doors that are flourished with greenery.
I walk into the scent of Tiana's soft perfume. "Iris, you're late? What, did the world stop or something?" Tia says laughing. I'm always on time. I value punctuality highly, but today, I feel different and less uptight than usual. I slip off my jacket and lay my earmuffs around my neck. I secretly pull my favorite book front and center when Tia isn't looking. I join Tia in stacking the books on the right side of the store, and as I am placing a book on the shelf once more, the bell chimes, signaling a customer walking in.
"He is gorgeous.." Tia says, dropping a book out of her hand. I ignore her, not sure what she's talking about.
