20 weeks pregnant

"I don't know if I'm cut out for this," Maya said as she once again found herself staring at her reflection trying to think of a way to look more presentable and less pregnant.

"You'll be fine. And besides, I'll be right there with you," Lucas smiled.

He couldn't seem to take his eyes off Maya. Even with her round bump she looked beautiful. She turned to face him and sighed.

"How do I look?" she asked nervously.

Maya was wearing flowy red top and a white skirt that allowed room for her considerable middle. she had black tights and yellow flats on. It was still winter, after all.

"You look perfect," Lucas replied, and he really meant it.

"I don't know. Maybe I should change the shirt," Maya muttered.

She began tearing through her closet again. She emerged minutes later with a different red top.

"Yup. This one will be much better," she stated.

"Really? Because that looks the exact same as the other one," Lucas laughed.

"No, this one is more modest and adult-like. Turn around, I"m putting this one on," Maya snapped.

"Do I really have to turn around?" Lucas asked.

"What's that supposed to mean? Of course you have to turn around," Maya answered.

"Well, it's not like I haven't seen it before..." Lucas trailed off.

"That may be true, but I'm still not gonna strip for you Ranger Roy," Maya said, smirking this time.

She quickly changed and decided this top was much more suitable. They were finally ready to leave.

Today Maya and Lucas were meeting with their first prospective couple to adopt their baby. Maya had tried to look as proper as possible, but that wasnt really her style. There were so many things she was nervous about, she couldnt even pick one. Maya hadn't told her mother about this little meeting because Maya had a feeling her mother wanted her to keep the baby. Maya still didn't really know what she wanted. She hoped that meeting this couple would help her decide.

Maya and Lucas sat on the subway without much distance between them. Their hands were almost touching, but not quite. Maya couldn't think of much to say. She just kept one hand on where she guessed her baby was and thought about how she would ever be able to hand her over to strangers. She slouched in her seat which didn't look attractive, but was necessary because otherwise the baby squeezed on her bladder a bit too much.

"So have you talked to Riley?" Maya asked Lucas eventually to distract herself from her now unavoidable need to pee.

"Nope," Lucas answered simply.

"Have you tried?" Maya asked again.

"I did, but not anymore," he replied.

"What? Why? She's probably waiting for you to apologize," Maya explained.

"Look, Maya, I did try. I tried for a long time, but she wouldn't hear it. So now I've given up. Besides, maybe that's not what I want anymore," he said quietly.

Maya took a minute to breathe and process. Did he just say that? And if he did, what does that mean? He doesn't want to be with Riley anymore? Maya realised things might get weird if she didn't say something. She decided to just put that comment in the back of her mind and save it for later.

"Well you should still apologize. That's what I did," Maya said calmly.

They arrived at their subway stop. Lucas got of first and then extended and helped Maya as she stepped over the gap. Maya tried not to gush over how nice he was being. She let Lucas be in charge of finding the building they were looking for. It was 1:56pm. They weren't even late yet. They reached the building quickly and Maya suddenly felt very nervous.
