Maya pounded her small fists on the door repeatedly. Her face was magenta and her tears had dissappeared. Her blood was boiling as she ignored the pain in her hands from hitting the door. It was only six o'clock, so its not like she was waking anyone.
The door opened to reveal a very confused and slightly frightened Cory.
"Where's Riley?!" Maya yelled.
"She's at the table. We're in the middle of dinner, Maya," Cory told her.
Maya shoved past him and saw Riley. Maya could tell she knew what Maya was doing there.
"I thought you weren't even speaking to Lucas! Where do you get off telling him something that's none of your damn business?" Maya screamed.
She was pacing closer to Riley until she was right in front of her face. Cory took her shoulders and turned her around to face him instead.
"Maya, can you calm down please?" he said firmly.
"NO! I won't calm down! We can do this in front of them or you can get in there! Now!" Maya yelled as she wiggled out of Cory's grip to face Riley again.
She was pointing at Riley's bedroom door. She knew Riley wouldn't want to defend herself from Maya in front of her parents. Riley huffed and marched towards her bedroom. Maya followed in a similar fashion.
"Let me ask again: where do you get off telling Lucas something that's none of your damn business?!" Maya shouted.
"I thought he should know," Riley said trying to sound passive.
"So you just called Lucas to tell him I was with Josh and then hung up?" Maya asked.
"Yes," Riley answered.
"Why?" Maya demanded.
"Because I thought it was only fair after what you did to me," Riley said.
"That's not why, Riley. We were good. We talked it out. We were fine," Maya responded.
"Well, I just got mad when I saw you with Josh. I didn't think it was fair on Lucas or me. It's like that saying 'you can't have your cake and eat it too'," Riley explained.
"So you're saying I have to choose between Lucas and Josh and whichever one I choose I'm not allowed to hang out with the other one?" Maya snapped.
"No, but you shouldn't lead on Lucas if you still like Josh. Not to mention you're having his baby," Riley said.
"Yeah, well, he doesn't seem to care too much about that anymore," Maya mumbled.
"What?" Riley asked.
"He was all about keeping her and now he'd like nothing more than for me to pop her out right now and get rid of her," Maya admitted.
Riley's face softened.
"That's only because he's mad about you and Josh. That's my fault. I'm sorry, Maya," Riley said quietly.
"It's my fault. I never should've met with Josh. It's just that he seems to be the only impartial person here. He's not involved enough to be mad at me and it's not his kid, so he's just easy to talk to," Maya explained.
"I haven't really been there for you as much as I should have," Riley confessed.
"Everything's different now, isn't it?" Maya whispered.
"Yeah. But -if you're up for it- we can try our hardest to get back to as close to normal as we can," Riley said.
"Sounds good," Maya smiled.
They hugged and Maya's anger was gone. Although, she did have one question.
"How did you see us?" Maya asked.
"Through the peephole," Riley laughed.
"Who uses their peephole?" Maya laughed back.
"Me, I guess," Riley giggled.
They stayed in Riley's room catching up for a while. Maya really did feel like things were normal again.
"So you still haven't taked to Lucas?" Maya questioned.
"Nope. I'm not really not bothered about it anymore though. It is what it is," Riley stated.
Maya told Riley all about the adoptive couples and Riley told Maya she should keep the baby. They talked about possible names and room themes and the whole scenario got less and less likely the more they talked about it. Maya didn't care. She was just glad to be talking with Riley like they would have before she got pregnant.
When Maya finally got home that night, she was exhausted. She got dressed for bed but as soon as her head hit the pillow she was wide awake. She was worried, to say the least. She felt like she could no longer go with the method of deciding between adoption and parenthood at the last minute. She needed to get used to her decision and prepare herself. She'd taken action on the adoption side. It was time to take action on the parenthood side.
She unlocked her phone and began researching possible jobs. There weren't too many, but she drafted a generic e-mail and sent it to a few establishments. She was proud of herself until she remebered: Lucas doesn't want the baby anymore. Could she really do this alone? She wanted to be independant and not rely on Lucas for anything, but the thought still frightened her. She told herself she needed to forget him. She needed to force herself into accepting that this baby is her responsibilty only.
On the other hand, she ached as she thought of her daughter growing up without a father just as she had. She ached as she thought of Lucas, of her daughter having his smile, his hair, his eyes. She couldn't imagine removing him from her and her daughter's life.
She thought of her kiss with Josh. What was that about? She'd dreamed of such a thing happening for years and now it finally had. Maybe she should've reacted differently. Smiled, at least. Or not said anything at all. God, he was gorgeous.
Then her mind drifted back to that night with Lucas. It had felt so natural and easy, like they were both completely comfortable with each other. It felt right. As she was drifting to sleep with thoughts of Lucas spinning in her head, she felt her baby moving around inside her.
"What are we gonna do with you, kid?" Maya whispered aloud with her hand on the spot she felt her daughter stirring.
