Maya didn't want anything. She didn't want anyone to talk to her. She didn't want anyone touching her. She didn't want anyone looking at her. She just wanted to feel the pain fully and wait for it to be over. It was the worst pain she'd ever felt. It was a knife in her stomach that no one seemed to bother to remove. She never imagined it would be this bad, but it was.
Riley sat beside her as Maya lay on her back, squeezing her eyes shut in synchronization with her contractions. Maya had no thoughts in her head. All she could focus on was the pain. Sooner or later, the other bodies in the room started a conversation among themselves.
"How was work?" Riley asked Lucas, who was standing behind her chair.
"It was fine. It's just waiting tables," Lucas replied absently.
He wasn't thinking about work right now.
Then Maya heard Katy and Topanga whispering by the door.
"You really think she can do this?" Katy said nervously.
"She's gonna have to. But I think she'll be okay," Topanga answered, gazing at Maya sympathetically.
"I can hear you," Maya said loudly.
Katy moved over to Maya and placed her own hand over Maya's.
"I'm sorry, honey, but you won't let us talk to you. We're worried," Katy told her.
Maya didn't reply, she just let a single tear stream down her face. The pain was unbearable and she doubted it would ever end. No one saw the tear but her mother, who quickly reached down and wiped it away.
The doctor burst in and told everyone to get out so she could examine Maya.
"Alright honey, we need to take you up to the delivery room," she said.
"Is it almost over?" Maya said dreamily.
"Yup. Now comes the hard part," she told her.
Maya was wheeled up two floors and the whole party followed closely behind. She was making involuntary noises now, clenching her teeth every 45 seconds.
Once she was set up, they asked who she wanted in the room.
"My mom, and ask Lucas if he wants to come in," Maya said quickly.
She could tell she was close to the end now. The nurse returned with Lucas and Katy looked tired and worried. Lucas rushed to Maya's and she grabbed for his hand. She was terrified.
"Okay Maya, when I say push you push, and when I say stop you stop, got it?" the doctor explained.
Maya nodded vigorously. She could hardly speak.
"Okay. Dad, you stay up by her head. Mom, come down by her legs," the doctor ordered.
Lucas kept hold of Maya's hand as Katy put a hand on Maya's shin.
"We're ready to go. Start pushing, sweetie."

25th April, 3:17am
Maya heard her cries and automatically began crying herself. She was so tiny . The doctor placed her on Maya's chest and Maya just sobbed. She had such tiny fingers and tiny toes. Lucas still hadn't let go of Maya's hand, and his other hand just hovered over his daughter. The baby was taken to be cleaned and Maya's mother followed. Lucas and Maya looked at each other with the exact same look of absolute fear and undeniable joy. He kissed her on the lips and neither of them tried to refer back to their "just friends" agreement.
Maya was back in her room when she got to hold her baby again. Lucas had stayed with her the whole time. The baby was fast asleep and all wrapped up in blankets. Maya held her for a while and then passed her to Lucas. He gazed at her and Maya's heart melted. He have her back to Maya and they both just stared at her for a while.
"What's her name?" Lucas asked ever-so-quietly.
"April. Don't you think her name is April?" Maya sniffed. She couldn't seem to fully stop the tears.
"Yeah, I do think her name is April," Lucas smiled.
"What about a middle name?" Maya asked.
"Farkle told me about Evelyn from the drugstore. April Evelyn?" Lucas suggested.
"I love it," Maya smiled.

Maya slept for a few hours while everyone else went home. They all came back at about 5pm to see the new arrival.
Riley, Cory, Topanga and Auggie were the first ones there.
"Matthews, this is April Evelyn Friar-Hart. Be careful; she's very little," Maya announced as she handed April to Cory.
He later passed her to Topanga, who then made Riley sit before she was allowed hold her on account of her clumsiness.
"She's so beautiful, Maya," Riley said emotionally.
Maya just smiled and stared at her daughter. She had very light brown hair and bright blue eyes. Her nose was tiny and her lips were perfectly shaped.
Farkle visited later with his father. Josh also dropped by, much to Lucas's dismay. Maya didn't care who came; she was just so proud to be this little child's mother. Maya's mother had been in and out throughout the day, but she came in again once everyone was gone.
"She looks just like you, honey," she said as she held April in her arms.
"You think?" Maya asked.
"Definitely. And I love the name. April showers bring May flowers, that's what they say," Katy reminded.
Maya nodded along at the time, thinking it was her mother trying to be poetic. But the more she thought about it, the more she liked the symbolism of the name. April was the rain that seemed like a bad thing, but turned out to be a beautiful thing. And Maya always liked the rain.
At the end of the night, Lucas pulled out a cot bed next to Maya's and told her he'd stay with her. Her mother ad gone home because she had to get up for work in the morning. Maya was practicing feeding April just before they took her away to bed.
Lucas came over and sat on the edge of the bed.
"Can you believe we're parents?" he asked.
Maya laughed.
"Nope. Hasn't quite hit me just yet," she admitted.
Lucas smiled.
"She is beautiful though, isn't she?" Lucas asked.
"Yeah, she is," Maya smiled.
Lucas kissed Maya's forehead before kissing his daughter's forehead.
They all sat together, Lucas holding Maya's hand, Maya holding April's hand, Lucas rubbing April's cheek. This was it. They were a family now.
And the funny thing was, Maya felt like they were a family. As unconventional and young as they were, Maya suddenly felt as though it was meant to be this way all along.
Her, Lucas and their daughter. One accidental, yet happy, little family.
