It was all so hurried and blurry. The delivery man called an ambulance after Maya realized she couldn't stand up and and her stomach kinda hurt. Panic didn't begin to describe how Maya felt in the ten minutes she laid at the end of the stairs waiting for the ambulance. She couldn't help it, she had to call Lucas. Her hands were shaking and her breathing was ragged. He took a while to pick up and for a second Maya wondered why, but now was not the time.

"Hi," Lucas said happily.

"L-Lucas I fe-fell down the st-st-stairs," Maya gasped.

She was practically hyperventilating.

"What? Did you just say you fell down the stairs?" Lucas asked quickly.

"Y-yes. In my apartment building," Maya spluttered.

"Oh my God, did you call 911?!" Lucas panicked.

"Uh-huh," Maya breathed.

"Maya, stay calm okay?" Lucas said seriously.

"I'm scared. Lucas, I'm really scared," Maya said shakily.

"I know, I know. You're gonna be fine, okay? You're fine. Just keep breathing, okay? Deep breaths," Lucas said.

"Uh-huh," Maya said, trying to take his advice.

"I'm gonna go to the hospital now. Okay?" Lucas told her.

Then Maya saw the paramedics rushing up to her and she simply hung up the phone. All these months, she had been so used to never feeling alone. Whether she liked it or not, she always had her little girl with her. She always knew she was there, and it had always been a comfort to her. She no longer knew if she had that anymore. Never had she felt more alone than she did in that moment.

Her belly looked so big from this angle. It seemed even bigger than normal all of a sudden. The ceiling of the ambulance seemed to have all kinds of lights and hooks and plugs and Maya didn't know what any of them were for. They asked for her mother's phone number, but they wouldn't let Maya talk to her. She was only now beginning to comprehend how much pain she was in. Her arm hurt, her tummy hurt, her ankle hurt, even her head hurt.

They'd stuck an IV in her arm and kept trying to talk to her, but they didn't have the one piece of information she wanted.

"Is she alive? Is my baby alive?" Maya said over and over again.

"We won't know until we get to the hospital, sweetie. The best thing you can do for your baby right now is relax and let us do our job," one of the paramedics said kindly.

Maya tried to close her eyes and let the sound of the siren lull her out of consciousness.

"Fifteen year old female, 32 weeks pregnant. Took a fall down a flight of stairs. We need to get her on a fetal monitor right away," Maya listened to the tell the doctors about her while she lay there, terrified.

She felt them lift up her shirt and strap things to her belly. She looked up at one of the monitors, but it made no sense to her. Maya wished and hoped with everything she had inside her that inside her that they would pick up a heartbeat. It seemed to be taking an awfully long time.

"Perkins, I've got a fetal hearbeat," Maya heard.

"Nice. What about the contractions?" she heard someone else say.

"They're at uneven intervals, we've gotta get OB down here. Water hasn't broken though," someone said.

A nurse bent down next to Maya while everyone else fussed around her.

"Listen, Maya. Your baby currently has a heartbeat, but you are having some contractions. Now we're gonna do everything we can, but there's a chance we may have to deliver the baby," she explained.

"No, no, no, no. No, see she's too little. She's not ready!" Maya cried.

"We're gonna do everything we can to keep her in. We need to put you under now so we can fix you up. You're gonna be just fine," the nurse told her.

Maya caught a glimpse of Lucas trying to get to her and being stopped. He looked completely distraught. Maya tried to call to him, put someone as placing a mask around her mouth and before she knew it everything blurred and flipped into darkness.

Maya opened her eyes for a split second, but neither of them saw. Riley was sitting on a chair by the bed and Lucas was standing next to her. Maya kept her eyes closed and started listening to their conversation.

"But she told you she loves you?" Riley asked.

"Yeah," Lucas said.

"And you didn't tell her you love her?" Riley questioned.

"No," Lucas said quietly.

"Why not?" Riley pestered.

"Because it wasn't that kind of thing, Riley. We were deciding to be friends," Lucas explained.

"I don't get it. You two are meant to be together. I knew she loved you ever since I saw how mad she was at me when I told you about Josh. I knew you loved her ever since I saw how mad you were at her when I told you about Josh. You're having a baby together, Lucas. She should know how you feel about her," Riley said.

Maya heard someone leave the room and then she heard someone getting closer to her. The bent down beside her and ran their thumb gently across her cheek.

"I love you, Maya. I'm sorry I didn't have the guts to say it when you were conscious," Lucas said quietly.

It was very difficult for Maya to stay fake-asleep and act like she didn't hear it, but she managed for a few more minutes. She gradually opened her eyes and he came back to her side.

"She's not here yet, is she?" Maya asked.

"Nope. She's gonna stick around inside you for a little while longer," Lucas smiled.

All of a sudden, Lucas pressed his lips against hers. Maya knew this wasn't good for their new "just friends" movement, but she let him anyway. Her baby was alive and Lucas was at her bedside. Everything was fine.
