22 weeks pregnant

Maya had been interviewing all day. Despite trying her best, getting coached by Riley and even having phrases written on her hand, she still felt like she hadn't done well. She'd been to a fast-food restaraunt, a movie theatre and a supermarket. She didn't really want any of the jobs, but if she wanted to keep her baby she had no choice. Now all she had to do was wait for a call. It was Friday afternoon, so Maya decided to head over to Riley's. She needed to talk to her about the interviews and get her opinion.

Riley was sitting on the couch watching TV. Maya didn't knock, she just walked in and sat down next to her. Riley didn't take her eyes off the TV.

"What's up?" Maya asked.

"My parents let me babysit Auggie again. They won't be back for a while," Riley said.

She sounded nervous and Maya knew something was wrong.

"Is that a problem?" Maya prodded.

"Lucas texted me. He's coming over to talk," Riley confessed.

She turned to face Maya and Maya's eyes widened.

"No, no, no, no Riley. He can't come over here! I'm still fighting with him!" Maya exclaimed.

"I'm sorry! I didn't know you were coming over! But I think it'll be good for us to talk and clear things up," Riley explained.

There was a knock on the door and Maya sprung out of her seat.

"Fine. Two things: don't tell him I'm here and don't tell him I told you we're fighting and he doesn't want to keep the baby and stuff. Got it?" Maya whispered.

"Got it," Riley said louder than Maya would've liked.

Maya took off into Riley's room and sat down on the floor in front of the door. She was hoping she'd be able to overhear the conversation. She heard the door open and footstep heading towards the couch.

"I just wanted to come here to apologize," Maya heard Lucas say.

"I appreciate that," Riley replied.

"And I wanted to know where we stand," Lucas said.

"Lucas, you were my first love and I'll never forget that. But I can never be with you after this. Even if Maya doesn't keep the baby, it's never gonna be the same now," Riley said.

"I agree. I just wanted to make sure we can still be friends. You're a great person, Riley. I know you forgave Maya and that must've taken a lot. I don't expect you to do the same for me, but at some point I'd like if we could all still be friends. I never meant to hurt you and I'm really sorry I did. You didn't deserve that," Lucas trailed off.

Maya had to strain to hear Riley's response.

"Thank you for saying that. I'd like us to still be friends too," she said quietly.

"Really? That's great, Riley," Lucas breathed.

Maya got distracted by her phone buzzing. It was an email. She opened it and couldn't help but smile. She'd gotten the job at the movie theatre.

She went back to trying to listen at the door but she couldn't hear anything. Oh my God, what if they're kissing?, she thought. They couldn't be kissing, could they? They just said they were never gonna date again. I should go out there and stop them. What? No! That would be so awkward.

Maya heard the door close and Riley called her out. Maya ran to the living room, expecting Riley to tell her they got back together or something.

"Come here, sit down. You look so worried," Riley laughed.

"H-how'd it go?" Maya stuttered.

"It's over. We're not gonna date each other, but we both still want to be friends. It went just how I wanted it to," Riley smiled.

Maya didn't know what Riley was so happy about, but she decided to focus on what was impotant: they didn't get back together.

"I have a job at the movies," Maya told Riley.

"That's great! When do you start?" Riley chirped.

"Next month," Maya said, suddenly realizing how soon that seemed.

"Wow, pretty soon then! So does this mean you're keeping her?" Riley asked.

"Well, I'm still not sure, I have to talk to my mom if I can still live with her. I have to see if the money from my job will be enough to pay for all the stuff I'll need. It's a lot," Maya sighed.

"You'll figure it out. I know you will," Riley reassured her.

And there was something in Riley's voice that made Maya feel like she really could figure it out.
