Maya could hear the gentle tapping on the door over her hiccup-like cries.
"Maya, let me in. Please," Lucas said quietly.
He couldn't see her, but he knew she was in there.
She was sitting on the ground against the door. She'd locked the door behind her after she picked the lock to get in in the first place. She hadn't closed any of the blinds, but he hadn't even looked inside. He knew where she was.
"Listen, we need to talk. Just let me in before I get caught talking to a classroom door," Lucas requested.
Maya sighed and flipped the lock open and scooted out of the way. Lucas slowly opened the door and locked it behind him. He proceeded to pull down all the blinds in the classroom before going to his desk and sitting down. Maya was still on the ground by the door. They said nothing for quite a while. Maya finally stood up and took her seat in front of Lucas. She didn't look at him, she just faced the blackboard as if she were expecting Mr. Matthews to appear and teach her something. She felt a single finger poke her back and she turned around, leaning her arm on his desk.
Lucas stared at her, his eyes full of love and pain at the same time. She couldn't take it. She turned back around, but left her elbow on his desk.
"We're gonna play a game. It's called we-made-up-a-few-weeks-ago-but-things-are-still-kinda-weird-so-we-need-to-talk. This is how it goes: I say something, and then you say something. You don't have to reply to what I say, but you can if you want. Got it?" Lucas explained.
Maya nodded.
"I'll start off easy. This isn't working. Us. We're not working."
"I can't believe you didn't defend me when that bitch was making fun of me."
"I think you've been feeling sorry for yourself lately and you need to get over it."
"I think you and Riley still have something because you have these stupid secret whispers all the time."
"I think you're too paranoid and you don't trust me when really I shouldn't trust you with Josh."
"I can't believe you didn't wear a condom that night."
"I can't believe you didn't tell me to."
"I don't know why you were so pissed when I wouldn't go to the dance with you. You clearly had no problem finding someone else."
"I got a job yesterday."
"You didn't have to do that. I would've been just fine by myself."
"You won't let me help you. You say you want me to be involved but then you don't let me get involved."
"I think you think this is my fault."
"I don't. I think you love Josh."
"I think you love Riley."
"I don't."
"I think you made too big of a deal out of me kissing Josh."
"I don't think that was the only time."
"Did Riley tell you that?"
"No, but thanks for confirming."
"There was only one other time."
"Great."
"What are we? Are we dating? Are we just friends? I don't understand what we are."
"I don't understand either."
"Well we should decide what we are."
"My mom offered to help with the baby the other day. I couldn't believe it."
"I love you."
There were many minutes of silence. Then Maya felt a poke on her back again. She slowly turned around. Lucas extended a hand and she took it. He guided her up to the front of the classroom, behind Mr. Matthews' desk. He took out his phone and turned on a slow song. The volume was low so no one would catch them. He took her in his arms and they began to sway to the rhythm of the song.
"I think we're too young to have a baby and a serious relationship at the same time," he said.
"You're probably right," Maya allowed.
"Maya, I have no interest in being with anyone else," Lucas told her.
"So what does this mean? We're gonna be friends with a baby?" Maya asked.
"For now, yeah. I think that's exactly what it means," Lucas replied.
"Okay," Maya said.
"Okay," Lucas said.
"So what do we do now?" Maya asked.
"I think we just keep dancing," Lucas whispered.
And they danced silently, Maya's head on Lucas's shoulder, Lucas's arms around Maya's waist. Just friends.

A/N: Tbh I really like this chapter. I'm gonna do a follow up one just to finish the Riley drinking thing and then move on to the next week set. Opinions on them just staying friends? Good decision or bad decision? Leave a comment :)
