In the morning, the sunlight filtered gently through the curtains, casting a warm glow in the hotel room. Nora stretched, the remnants of sleep slipping away as she padded over to the bathroom where Hap was already preparing. He was buttoning up his shirt in front of the mirror, each movement precise and practiced.
"You already have your speech prepared?" she asked, reaching for her toothbrush.
"Yes," he replied, adjusting his collar. "It's a talk I've given at a previous conference. Just a few updates."
She gave a small nod, watching him as she brushed her teeth. "So, you're a bit of a seasoned professional at this, then?"
He chuckled softly. "Something like that. It's part of the job," he said, glancing at her reflection in the mirror with a slight smirk. "But I do need to keep things fresh. Each time, I refine it just a little."
She rinsed her mouth, dabbing her face dry with a towel before she spoke again. "Well, don't let me throw you off," she teased. "I'll just be the silent partner, nodding along, absorbing all the science talk."
He turned to her, fastening his cufflinks. "Actually, you're my support," he said, his tone warm. "Just being there gives me a confidence boost."
She arched an eyebrow, smiling as she applied a light layer of makeup. "Is that so?"
Hap's gaze softened as he watched her apply her makeup, and he smiled, the hint of pride unmistakable. "Yes. I love the idea of you sitting in the audience, patiently waiting for me, behaving yourself."
Nora's eyes sparkled with a mischievous glint. "Oh, I'll be on my best behavior," she promised, feigning an innocent look. "Can I put my sketchpad in your briefcase? I'd love to sketch you while you lecture. Wouldn't that be something?"
He laughed, a genuine sound that was rare for him. "Sketching me, hmm?" His eyes narrowed with amusement as he considered her request. "I'd imagine that could make me even more popular than my speech," he said, opening his briefcase and making room for her sketchpad.
"Thank you," she murmured, slipping it inside. She glanced at him, her expression serious for a moment. "It'll be nice to just... sit and observe you in your element. See you as Dr. Percy, the professional. Not my—" She stopped herself, catching his gaze.
"Your what?" he asked, tilting his head, curious.
"Let's just say... I'm looking forward to seeing this side of you," she said with a sly smile, redirecting her focus to her hair.
Hap adjusted his tie, glancing at Nora with a steady, commanding gaze. "I really do expect you to behave today. You're going to be in the company of some of the field's most brilliant minds."
She paused, brushing her hair with slow strokes, a teasing smile creeping onto her lips. "People smarter than you?" she quipped, turning to meet his eyes.
His brow arched, but he didn't take the bait fully. "In some areas, perhaps," he allowed, his tone calm but firm. Then his voice deepened with pride. "But no one, Nora—no one—has made the breakthroughs that we have. No one is even close."
Her expression softened as she took in his words, recognizing the weight of his obsession. "You've been chasing this for so long," she said quietly, almost to herself. "I can't imagine what it feels like to know you're so far ahead of the rest."
He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming but not unwelcome. "It feels like a responsibility," he said, his blue eyes locking with hers. "To push further. To prove that this work will change everything. And to make sure the world understands its significance."
