The lab was sterile and cold, the fluorescent lights humming faintly above Nora as she lay strapped into the experimental tube. The restraints bit into her wrists and ankles, unyielding and cruel, as if Hap had designed them to match the emotional walls she had built between them. There was no warmth in her eyes as she stared up at the glass dome that would soon lower over her head. No fire, no fight—just a void.
Hap stood beside the tube, his perfectly maintained lab vest on but his expression unraveling. His usually sharp, commanding demeanor had softened, replaced with something almost pitiable. Desperation clung to him like a second skin, his hands gripping the edge of the tube as if he could anchor himself to it, to her, to whatever was left between them.
"Nora," he said, his voice low and imploring, "I know you're angry with me. I know you think I've gone too far. But what we had before—what we were—it wasn't a lie. You know that. Don't you?"
She didn't answer, her gaze fixed somewhere far away, as if staring through him. The silence was louder than the hum of the equipment, more deafening than any scream.
"Nora," he tried again, his voice cracking slightly. "You've always understood the importance of this work. I know I've made mistakes, but this—this is bigger than both of us. Can't you see that? Can't you see that we're on the brink of something extraordinary?"
Her lips barely moved as she whispered, "I don't care."
The words struck him harder than a slap. Hap recoiled, his grip tightening on the tube's edge. "You don't mean that," he said, shaking his head. "I know you don't mean that. You've always cared. You're the only one who truly understands."
She turned her head away, her voice devoid of emotion. "What I understand is that you'll say anything to keep me compliant. I'm done listening to you, Hap. It's all manipulation. Every word you say."
He moved beside her, his face inches from hers, his beautiful blue eyes searching hers desperately. "It's not manipulation," he insisted. "It's the truth. Everything I've done—everything—has been for this. For us. For what we can discover together. I need you, Nora. I can't do this without you."
Her head snapped back to him, her eyes cold and unyielding. "You don't need me. You need control. That's all you've ever needed."
Hap's jaw tightened, his desperation bleeding into frustration. "Control? Is that what you think this is about? If I wanted control, I wouldn't have let you come to New York. I wouldn't have given you freedom to see the world again. I've given you more than I've ever given anyone else."
"More?" she scoffed, her laugh hollow and bitter. "You call this freedom? You strap me into this torture device, drown me, and call it discovery. You steal my life and call it love. I'm done, Hap. There's nothing left for you to take."
The glass dome hissed as it began to lower, Hap pausing mid-motion to halt it. He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a whisper, heavy with pleading. "Nora, please. Don't shut me out like this. We can fix this. We can go back to how things were. Just say you'll try. Say you'll trust me again."
She closed her eyes, tears slipping from the corners. Her voice was a quiet, fractured thing. "I'll never trust you again."
As the water continued to rise around her, Nora's breathing hitched, her chest tightening—not from the encroaching liquid but from the weight of Hap's words. His voice cut through the mechanical hum of the lab, sharp and pleading, desperate to convince her, to tether her to his vision of a future that she couldn't share.
"I'll take you away from all of this," Hap said, leaning closer, his hand resting on the edge of the glass dome as if to bridge the gap between them. His voice was soft, almost tender, a stark contrast to the restraints binding her. "Just you and me, Nora. We have the first three movements. We know the first two heal. Do you understand what that means? We could open a clinic somewhere, perform miracles together. Save lives. Think of it, Nora. Just us."
