It was several days later down in the pods. Nora had completely ignored Hap throughout the process of her miscarriage. It had been an unforeseen circumstance, one that they had both caused. However, in Nora's mind, if he hadn't killed her for the sake of the experiment, the pregnancy would have progressed.
Even though she wasn't ready for that, the loss was still an ache deep inside her. She felt it every second of the day and all she wanted was for Hap to hurt as well.
Hap watched on the monitors, seeing the signs of fatigue written all over Nora as she stumbled around her pod that morning, her food untouched as usual. He knew he had to do something. Hap went downstairs watching her through the glass of her pod. "Come on," he motioned towards the door where he unlocked it.
Nora wanted to protest but she was too tired and sick. As much as she wanted to hurt Hap and keep her distance, she couldn't deny the appeal of going upstairs to eat and bathe. She wanted and needed this one piece of comfort, she deserved it for what she was going through.
She walked past him, barely acknowledging him as they walked towards the stairs. Hap guided her upstairs, his hand gently resting on her lower back for support as she ascended the spiral staircase to the main floor of the house. Once upstairs, Hap ran a hot bath for her while she took down her Dutch braids, brushing out the knots that had formed from her tossing and turning in bed.
"I liked how you did those braids. They looked nice," Hap said, hesitantly as if to test her willingness to talk. His blue eyes met hers briefly as a glimpse of solemness crossed his usually calm features.
"Thank you, Hap," she sighed, as she started getting undressed to get into the bath. "I think I can handle it from here."
Hap nodded, understanding the boundaries she was setting. He stood up, hesitating for a moment as if unsure whether to leave or stay. "I'll give you some space then," he finally said, his voice low. "If you need anything—"
"I'll let you know," Nora interrupted, her tone firm yet tired. She sank into the hot bath, the water enveloping her in a warm embrace that contrasted sharply with the cold emptiness she felt inside.
As he turned to leave, Hap paused at the door, his hand on the knob. "Nora," he began, unsure, "I really am sorry. I know it doesn't change anything or fix what happened, but I am."
Nora didn't look at him, focusing instead on the patterns the steam made as it rose from the bath. "Apologies are just words, Hap. Right now, words aren't enough."
Hap felt the weight of her words, a tightness in his chest. He opened his mouth as if to say more, then closed it, recognizing the futility of further dialogue at this moment. With a final, lingering glance at her, he stepped out and closed the door gently behind him.
Alone, Nora allowed herself a few moments to truly feel the grief that was gnawing at her edges. The water's heat seeped into her muscles, loosening the tension, but the ache in her heart remained taut and unyielding. She knew Hap's apologies were sincere, yet sincerity wasn't a salve for the pain of betrayal and loss.
She dipped her head back, letting the water cover her ears, muffling the sounds of the outside world. In this temporary silence, she contemplated her next steps. Each conversation with Hap shifted the dynamics ever so slightly, weaving a complex tapestry of manipulation, control, and a desperate search for autonomy.
Nora knew that navigating this relationship with Hap was a delicate dance on a tightrope of her own making. Each word, each silence, each acceptance or defiance played a role in crafting her path forward. And right now, she needed to decide how much of herself she was willing to reveal and what parts she needed to guard, as the battle of wills between them continued to unfold.
