The low, atmospheric hum of Rings of Saturn pulsed through Hap's headphones as he leaned back in his chair, letting the music relax him after the long day of experiments and mounting pressure.
The steady beat, the complex, distorted sounds, were a welcome distraction, providing a moment of peace in the otherwise tense and isolated environment of his lab. His eyes were half-closed, the flickering glow of the computer screens casting an eerie light across the room.
What he didn't hear, however, was the soft, calculated steps of Sheriff Stan as he entered the room. The sheriff had been to Hap's house before, but tonight was different. This time, he wasn't here for a casual check-in. This time, he had come for answers.
Hap didn't notice until the cold barrel of a gun was pressed against the back of his head.
"Don't move," Sheriff Stan's voice was calm, but there was a cold edge to it. He hadn't bothered with a greeting, or even the niceties of a lawman. This wasn't the friendly sheriff coming by to ask questions. No, this was the sheriff who had seen enough. "What's going on here, Hap?"
Hap's heart raced in a split-second as the realization hit him. He immediately froze, hands raised in the air, trying to keep his voice steady. "Stan, I—I know how this looks, but I can explain," he said quickly, trying to keep his calm despite the cold weight of the gun against his skull.
But Stan wasn't in the mood for explanations. The sheriff's gaze moved from Hap to the screens, where the faces of the captives in the basement were displayed. The monitors flickered, showing Homer, Rachel, Renata—each of them trapped in their pods, their lives suspended in a cruel, experimental limbo. Stan's jaw clenched, his eyes narrowing in disgust.
"You're going to explain it in the deposition," Stan said flatly, not taking his eyes off the screen. "And you're going to explain why I found these people down here."
Hap felt the pressure of the moment bearing down on him. His mind raced, the thoughts of everything he had built—everything he had done—flashing through his mind. The sheriff could arrest him, could lock him up, but there was something he had to say first, something he had been holding onto for far too long.
"Evelyn," Hap said suddenly, his voice trembling with a mix of fear and hope. "Stan, your wife... She could be healed. They could cure her. These people—these subjects—they have abilities, Stan. They can heal her."
Stan didn't respond immediately, the tension between them thickening with each passing second. Hap's hands shook as he slowly turned in his chair to face the sheriff, his mind scrambling for something—anything—to make this make sense.
"One of my subjects," Hap continued, his voice shaking but insistent, "one of them died... and we brought him back to life. We can bring Evelyn back, Stan. We can heal her. Give them the chance to try."
Sheriff Stan's eyes never wavered from him. There was something in his gaze—something that made Hap's heart race with a terrifying mixture of dread and anticipation. Stan was unmoved, his expression stone-cold. "Get up," he ordered, his voice low and authoritative. "I'm cuffing you. We're taking you in."
