"You're sure you packed the flashlights, right?" Heechul called out over the clatter of gear being shuffled around in the back of the van. The group of young men, some with their heads buried in maps and others checking their equipment, murmured affirmations. They were all dressed in black, blending into the shadows of the night like a squad of ninjas.
"Got 'em," Siwon assured, holding up a sturdy pack that clinked faintly. "Batteries checked, too. We're good to go."
With a nod from Leeteuk in the driver's seat, the van's engine rumbled to life. They had been planning this night's mission for weeks, a mix of excitement and tension palpable in the air. The headlights cut through the inky darkness as they navigated down the deserted road. The wind whispered secrets through the trees that lined the path, their branches casting eerie shadows that danced across the asphalt.
As they approached the rendezvous point, Leeteuk's eyes caught a glint of something on the floor near the passenger's seat. He leaned over and picked it up, squinting in the dim light. It was Eunhyuk's phone, the screen illuminating the van's interior with a soft blue glow. A notification was flashing: "Low battery." He frowned, knowing their friend was notorious for forgetting to charge his devices.
"Guys, Eunhyuk forgot his phone," he said, holding it up. The group groaned collectively.
"Again?" Donghae said, rolling his eyes.
Yesung took a deep breath. "We can't leave without it. It's the emergency contact."
Heechul sighed. "Alright, we'll have to go back for it. But make it quick. We're on a tight schedule tonight."
The van made a U-turn and sped back towards the house they had just left. The headlights swept over the driveway, and there, perched on the porch railing, was a small, sleek black cat. Its eyes reflected the light like twin moons. As the van pulled up, the cat jumped down and sauntered over, tail flicking curiously.
Donghae leaned out of the window. "Look at it, so cute! Maybe it's a sign of good luck."
Ryeowook chuckled. "Or maybe it's just lost."
Ignoring the teasing, Donghae scooped the cat into his arms. It purred contentedly, its fur as soft as velvet. He looked into its eyes, which held a surprising depth of understanding. "You're coming with us, little guy. We've got important business to attend to."
The van pulled into the hospital's parking lot 11 minutes later, the dashboard clock's glowing digits a silent testament to their delay. Eunhyuk was pacing outside the emergency room entrance, his eyes widening when he saw the headlights approaching.
"You're back!" he exclaimed as they climbed out.
Leeteuk nodded, handing Eunhyuk his phone. "We had to turn around. You can't keep forgetting these things, man."
Eunhyuk took the phone with a sheepish grin. "Sorry, guys. Thanks for coming back."
Without missing a beat, Donghae handed him the cat. "Here, I found you a new buddy. He was just waiting for you by the road."
Eunhyuk took the feline in surprise, its purrs vibrating against his chest. "What? You can't be serious."
But Donghae was already back in the van, grinning. "We can't just leave him out there. He's obviously looking for some action."
Eunhyuk looked down at the purring cat, then up at his friends. "Alright, fine. Let's go. I'll tell you what happened on the way."
As the van pulled out of the hospital parking lot, Eunhyuk recounted his clumsy tumble down the stairs. He had been rushing to grab a forgotten water bottle and slipped, twisting his ankle in the process. "It's not broken, just sprained," he said, wincing slightly as he flexed his foot. "But they had to wrap it up tight. I guess it's going to slow us down."
The group exchanged concerned glances, but Heechul was quick to reassure him. "Don't worry, we've got you. Besides, we're not exactly running a marathon tonight."
Kibum climbed into the van, his cheeks slightly flushed from the cold night air. "I grabbed some snacks for the road," he announced, holding up a juice box and a bag of chips. The tension in the air eased a bit as the group laughed.
But Hangeng's return was what truly surprised them. He emerged from the shadows with a bouquet of flowers, the vibrant colors stark against the black of his outfit. "I found these at the flower shop down the street," he said with a shrug, as if it were the most natural thing in the world to bring flowers to a covert mission.
"Flowers?" Yesung raised an eyebrow. "What are we, a boy band on a surprise visit?"
"It's for luck," Hangeng said firmly, passing the bouquet to Eunhyuk. "And maybe to sweet talk our way out if we get caught."
Siwon took out his phone, his thumb hovering over Kangin's contact. He had been tasked with keeping their friend updated on their whereabouts. The signal was weak, but it was crucial to maintain communication. He stepped aside, away from the chatter of his group, and dialed the number. It took a few rings before a groggy voice answered.
"Yeoboseyo?" Kangin's voice was thick with sleep, and Siwon felt a pang of guilt for waking him.
"It's us," Siwon whispered. "We're on our way to the first location. Eunhyuk's with us."
"What?" Kangin's voice sharpened. "Is he okay?"
Siwon nodded, even though Kangin couldn't see him. "Yeah, just a sprained ankle. But he's in good spirits."
"I'm on my way to your room," Kangin said, his voice tight with worry. "Keep me updated."
Siwon nodded and ended the call, slipping the phone back into his pocket. He climbed into the van and relayed the message to the others, who nodded solemnly. Despite the addition of their furry stowaway and Hangeng's unexpected bouquet, the atmosphere had shifted. They were on a mission now, and Eunhyuk's well-being was at the forefront of everyone's minds.
The van rolled through the quiet streets, the only sound the hum of the engine and the occasional whispered instructions from Leeteuk as they approached the first location. The night was alive with a tension that seemed to pulse in sync with their racing hearts.
As they pulled into the shadow of an abandoned warehouse, Kangin's car pulled up alongside them, lights off. Sungmin, Zhoumi, Henry, and Shindong spilled out, all looking as tense as the group in the van.
"You guys okay?" Sungmin asked, scanning their faces.
Leeteuk nodded. "Yeah, we had a little detour." He glanced at Eunhyuk's bandaged foot and the cat that was now nestled in his arms. "But we're back on track now."
Ryeowook checked his watch, the glowing digits reading 12:09 AM. "Alright, we're behind schedule, but we can still make it." He looked at each of them in turn, his gaze steady. "Remember the plan?"
They nodded in unison, the gravity of their mission settling heavily on their shoulders. It was time to get to work. They climbed out of the van, the cat leaping nimbly to the ground and weaving around their legs as they unloaded their gear.
Leeteuk handed Eunhyuk a pair of crutches he had grabbed from the house. "These should help you move around," he said with a concerned look.
Eunhyuk took them with a nod of thanks. "I'm fine," he said, trying to mask his pain with a smile. "Let's go back and do this right."
The group made their way back to the van, the cat following them curiously. Donghae couldn't resist reaching down to stroke its soft fur as they walked. It arched its back, purring loudly in response. "Looks like you've made a friend," Heechul said, watching the unlikely bond form.
Once everyone was settled back in the van, Eunhyuk took a deep breath, clutching the bouquet of flowers tightly in one hand and the crutches in the other. He leaned back into the seat, his expression a mix of determination and pain. "I'm not letting this ruin the night," he murmured, more to himself than anyone else.
