chapter six:

the kiss

midnight love by girl in red

MADELAINE AND drew arrived back at the hotel after their day out in charleston. she turns around as the two approaches her hotel room door.

"thanks for showing me around today," she smiles. "you're a great tour guide."

"thanks for coming with me." drew smiles, looking down at her. he was a generous amount taller than her, causing her chin to lift up to see his eyes.

for a moment, the two stood just looking at each other. madelaine notices his eyes dip down to look at her lips, finding themselves in this situation for the second time today.

drew steps closer and madelaine takes in a sharp breath. before any other move could be made, one of the hotel doors beside them swing open.

"you're back!" madison says, closing her door behind her.

"uh, yeah!" madelaine smiles at her friend, looking down the ground and backing away from drew, hoping madison didn't see anything.

"i was just heading to the beach to look at the stars. the moon is supposed to be huge tonight!" madison tells them, setting her tote bag on her shoulder. "you guys wanna come?"

"um, i think i'm gonna call it a night," drew says. "you guys have fun." he smiles before walking down the hallway to his hotel room.

"do you have snacks in that bag?" madelaine raises her eyebrows, giving her a sly smile.

"duh." madison giggles, linking arms with madelaine and walking to the exit.

the two walk from the hotel, down the quiet streets until they get to the grassy beaches. madison lays out a soft beach towel on top of the sand dunes. the moonlight illuminated the water, waves lapping up the coast as the tide moves out back to sea.

"wow, it's beautiful." madelaine smiles in awe, looking up at the stars shining brightly in the night sky.

"i come out here alot." madison tells her, sitting down and taking out some cookies and fruit she ordered from hotel room service.

madelaine sits down next to her on the beach towel. "i can see why," she sighs. "you guys are so lucky to have this be where you work." she smiles, taking a strawberry from the plate.

"yeah," madison smiles, thinking back to all of the memories she has made over the last few years while working in charleston. "i'm really grateful."

madelaine lets the silence linger for a moment, chewing her fruit before speaking again. "how are you? i mean, with the whole breakup and everything."

madison looks down at the sand by her feet. "well i've definitely been better." she chuckles, picking a small piece of grass out of the earth and breaking it apart. "i just don't get mariah. things were going good. i thought we had worked out the long distance issue." she explains.

madelaine frowns. "i'm sorry, mads." she genuinely felt sorrow for her friend. madelaine knew breakups aren't easy at all.

"it's okay," madison shrugs. "sometimes i wish i was straight. men don't overthink nearly as much as women do." she sighs, a small chuckle escaping her lips, trying to find humor in the situation so she didn't have to be sad anymore.

"men don't think at all." madelaine rolls her eyes, earning a giggly laugh from madison.

"i know what you mean though," madelaine continues. "some people look at me so differently after i tell them i'm pansexual. i just wish they'd see me for me." she looks to the ground, drawing thin patterns in the sand.
