Test.

9 3 1

I sat up from my hammock, my back aching from the uncomfortable nights sleep I had had. My hair fell loose past my shoulders as I breathed in the air that flooded in from the barn doors opening.

Today was the day of the aptitude test.

My father bounced into the barn, shouting my name in an unusually happy tone, "Charlotte darling! Wake up, it is a big day for you!" He said, a huge smile beaming on his face. He was never this happy unless he was around someone else.

I waved to him and ushered him out as I grabbed my clothes from my bedside table. I threw on an orange and brown amity dress with some yellow leggings and brown boots to finish off the look. I stared at myself in the mirror for at least 10 minutes.

God I hate these clothes.

I brushed my hair, letting it flow past my shoulders. I felt its silky streaks brush my neck as the breeze bounced around me.

Before taking a good look at myself in the mirror, I headed down the stairs and stepped out into the world. Hundreds of amity walked past my, giving me unnerving smiles as they headed to the dome to get breakfast. I joined in with the crowd, following them in.

The queue was long and tiring, but I remained 'happy' as I waited for what felt like multiple dreadful hours for the queue to go down. When I got there, the only food available was bread and salad. I scooped up some salad into my plate, deciding I wasn't very hungry.

When I stepped out of the line, I gazed around the room for my father and found him sat next to my mother, his arm around her shoulder. My brother sat in front of them, his usually happy mood faded. I took a seat next to him and gave him a smile, before burying my fork into the pile of salad.

I took one bite and gipped. Everyone looked at me in disgust, some giving me reassuring looks, thinking I was unwell.

"Are you okay Char?" My mother asked, her soothing voice ringing in my ears as she waited for my awkward response. "Yes I am fine mother. I don't feel 100% today, that's all." I said, my formality making her jump.

I was never usually formal around my parents, even though amity expected at least some formal need in our speech.

When breakfast had finished, I got up and brushed the dust off of my legs, before heading to the truck that waited outside of the dome. It felt like months before the truck set off into town, where I would be completing my aptitude test.

When we arrived, I lined up outside of the tall building, my factions logo stood proudly upon the wall.

I stood behind a girl named Lottie. We had some sort of friendship, but she was talking to her other friends so I had no one to talk to. I didn't socialise much since I could speak, I didn't see the point in it really.

I had had a few boyfriends and a few best friends, but none were anything special to me.

I caught eye with a man wearing comfortable, basic grey clothes. I stared until I realised it was Marcus. Abnegations leader.

He announced a speech about the test. A speech I physically didn't want to listen to. The line went down slowly, as more and more people emerged from the exit of the testing rooms, their expression either excited, or nervous.

I was last in amity's line. And when it was eventually my turn, a petite, tanned woman opened the door for me, giving me a soft smile.

————

"My name is tori. I will be taking your test today." She said, handing my a small glass of blue liquid as I sat down on a dentist like chair. I looked at her funny, "What is it?" I asked. She just looked at me stupid. "Just drink it." She said, her glare no longer soft.

With one swig, the liquid glided down my throat, causing me to chuckle at the tingle that filled my throat, before everything went black.

——————-

I woke up in a room, my body already standing. I was surrounded by mirrors and two small bowls, one filled with meat, the other containing a very sharp knife. Another version of myself stood behind the bowls. "Pick one." She said, and I did as she asked with careful consideration. I reached for the meat, but something in my gut stopped me in my tracks.

I hesitated before slowly reaching for the object in the bowl beside it. The knife.

When I picked it up however, the two bowls in front of me vanished, and a large, slobbering golden Shepard took its place. It stared at me with pure hatred in its eyes.

We stood, staring at each other for a second. Before the dog ran at me, its fangs glaring at me.

It jumped up at me, and with no hesitation, I swung my arm, and the knife collided with the dog's neck.

I gasped as the dog slumped to the ground, a small tear forming upon my hazel brown, left eye before the world went black yet again.

I woke up, sat next to a man on a bus. I stood up, not feeling comfortable sat next to him.

He was reading the weekly newspaper, and I couldn't help but stare at it.

On it was the contents of an article about a murderous man. I recognised him, but I couldn't make out where from.

The man looked up at me, curiousness in his eyes. "Do you know this man?" He asked. I froze, just shaking my head. He asked again, his tone impatient, "I said do you know where this man is?" He asked. "No." I replied, crossing my arms. He stood up and grabbed me by my arm, "Answer the question! Do you know this man?!" He exclaimed, spit flying out of his mouth.

"No!" I said again, clearly lying. He pushed me into a wall, but I pushed back harder. He tumbled back into the wall, hitting his head on the pole I was holding onto just minutes ago. He fell unconscious, and the world for me and him, went black.

I woke up gasping for air. I looked at the tester next to me, her gaze fixed on the screen.

"So what did I get?" I asked.

She replied swiftly and abruptly, "You, friend, got Dauntless."
