When I woke up the next morning, my father stood in front of me, belt in hand. I scurried up, hiding myself behind my blanket as he scurried past the boxes toward me. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I prepared my body for the pain I was about to endure.
"Why did you tell your mother you got Amity on your aptitude test? Why did you lie to her!" He screamed, causing me to nestle further into the safety of my bed covers. "I didn't like I swear father! I got amity!" I exclaimed, not managing to make him believe me.
"Your mother came from fucking Candor Charlotte. Don't you think she knows when somebody is lying? Especially her own daughter?" He swore, making my body freeze.
"I'm sorry. I didn't want you to think ill of me, I love you all so much!" I exclaimed, but his expression refused to soften."Stand up and take your top off." He ordered, and I did just that, not thinking about what he would have done if I hadn't followed his wishes.
I took my top off and threw it onto my bed, tears running down my red stained cheeks. I braced myself as I heard him buckle his belt tighter, knotting it so it didn't fall apart.
With one swing, the belt hit me on my back, making me yelp. It was half an hour of torture.
When he walked out of the room I slumped onto my bed and cried for at least ten minutes.
When I pulled myself together, I put on something different, more confident. I put on some red leggings with a yellow tank top, that you were supposed to wear under a dress to keep you warm in winter. I slumped on a red jacket and covered my red, puffy eyes with some eyeshadow and concealed I had stolen from dauntless when my father had brought me along on an amity leaders trip. I put on some trainers and walked out of the door, my loose curls swinging around as everyone stared at me in either horror or disgust.
I sauntered into the dome, everyone going silent as they glared at me with their judging eyes. "What are you all looking at?" I asked them, and they immediately turned around once I had clenched my fists. The jacket hid my scars perfectly. I was contemplating showing them, but it would hurt my mother's reputation. And I loved my mother, and the faction, it was my father that I felt deep hate for.
I grabbed some salad and sat down next to my brother, his gleaming smile coming back as he saw me. He placed a hand on mine and gave me a "I love you no matter what" look and went back to eating his food.
I looked at his hand. He has scars too. My father was beating my brother too.

When we arrived at the choosing hall, I spotted where most of the red and yellow clothed people sat, and took my seat on the front row, which was reserved for the leaders families. I looked forward as the rest of the people sauntered in slowly. I heard every footstep, every murmur and every little thing I could think of as I grew more and more nervous.
My father kept glancing at me, but when Marcus Eaton spoke, his gaze fixed on him, and him only.
"Welcome to the choosing ceremony everyone. I am so glad you could join us today. It is a very big day today. It chooses the paths your children will take when they are older, and I am sure each and everyone of you will be proud of them, no matter what they choose." He paused.
"With that let the ceremony commence." He paused again. "And just remember. Faction before blood." He said.

My name was the first one called, and it almost made me jump. "Charlotte Ashcroft."
I stood, making my way toward the front where Marcus passed me a small pocket knife and glanced at me with a smile. I stood in front of the bowl, already fixed on what one I was going to pick.
I plucked the knife into my skin, and let it slide across my soft palm. I froze for a second before squeezing my hand, letting my blood sizzle over the pot of coal.
The dauntless crowd erupted into happy screams of laughter and excitement as I made my way over to them confidently. My old faction stared at me with disgust, trying to hide their anger.

When the ceremony was over, the dauntless wasted no time, standing up and running out of the double doors. As I followed them I didn't even give my old faction a glance, except my brother and my mother. My brother stayed with my mother, to protect her from my father. He should be abnegation, he is the most selfless person I know.
As we ran, we reached the pillars that held up the train tracks. We all stopped dead in our tracks, before all of them began to climb the pillars. I took no hesitation in following. I didn't fancy a meal with the faction less tonight.
When we made our way onto the train tracks, I immediately heard the sound of the horn on the train blow. The train came bustling down as the dauntless began to run. We were jumping on a moving train. I kept up with the others, my morning and night running coming in handy. I jumped as the train passed, grabbing the handle. I was the first one on. I clicked the button that opened the door, and helped a candor and abnegation transfer into the train.
"Thanks. Im tris and this is Christina, we both met on the side of the tracks." The abnegation girl said, as they both smiled at me. "I'm Charlotte, it's nice to meet you!" I said.
Christina looked at me funny. "What are you wearing? I thought you were in amity? Leggings and a crop top? You look like dauntless already!" Christina chuckled and so did I. I didn't answer her
