Su Li and the others were just as taken aback. What exactly did this man do?

Something clicked in Chen Yue’s mind. her eyes popped open, and she looked up hopefully at the officers.

Before the man’s very eyes, the police officer flipped through the papers in his hand and produced a wanted poster. “Theft of public funds, illegal gambling, and kidnapping of women and children. Rarely does a wanted man like yourself show up so cockily at the police station, Mr. Chen.”

Just a second ago, Chen Ping had been opposed to the detention, but now he stared wide-eyed at the arrest warrant in front of him. The absurdity of the situation hit him hard. “Me? A fugitive? What are you talking about?”

His picture from eight years ago, when he was getting his ID card, was used in the wanted poster. Chen Ping surveyed the strange yet familiar reflection. Although he was a hooligan and often engaged in illegal gambling, he only used his own money or the money he had managed to beg from Chen Yue. How could he have possibly embezzled public funds when he had not worked in over two years?

Moreover, in what sort of fantastical world would he kidnap women and children?

“What is this?” Chen Ping said in disbelief, “Why don’t I know anything about embezzling public funds? I don’t even have a job, so what funds do I have access to?”

Obviously, he tried to hide the fact that he had been gambling.

Su Li’s eyes also widened. How could this person have committed so many wrongdoings?!

Cheng Zhen also looked at him in shock, then asked Chen Yue in a low voice,

“Did this even happen?”

Chen Yue shook her head in confusion. She had no idea this person was still on the run despite having so many cases on him. She would have put him in jail a long time ago if she had known.

Only Yan Xin smiled, understanding, and anticipating what would happen next.

In a whirlwind, the police ran down all the pertinent details and possible explanations. Five years ago, public funds were stolen, gambling had been going on for a while, and the kidnapped woman was Chen Yue’s stepmother, a poor woman who was ten years younger than the man.

“That’s not true! That woman came to me on her own!” The man roared and struggled, but the handcuffs had already secured him tightly to the seat. “I was married to her. What kidnapping are you talking about? You didn’t investigate the embezzling of public funds five years ago, and now you’re investigating it? I’m being framed!”

The policeman ignored him and looked at Chen Yue instead. Continuing in his unusually lengthy monologue, he said, “I suggest that you agree to mediation for this assault because the criminal investigation team is already waiting to transfer him to a higher level for trial. Detaining him for a few more days is necessary if you intend to file suit against him for his injuries. But if you are willing to mediate, you can skip right to his other crimes being tried in court.”

“You did it on purpose. You framed me!” Chen Ping appeared to understand that he had been charged with several crimes and was about to go to prison. He struggled desperately.

However, the handcuffs in the police station were no stranger to human flesh and blood, and he was no exception.

Despite their initial shock, Chen Yue, Su Li, and the others deliberated for some time and ultimately decided to follow the police’s advice.

Therefore, the police expedited the mediation process. Upon leaving the mediation room, Su Li and the others were met by a large number of police officers dressed in a variety of uniforms. As they waited outside the mediation room, all of them wore expressions of serious intent.

“What’s going on…? Is he in big trouble because he has done so many bad things?” When Su Li finally came to, he saw Chen Ping being taken away in an elite police vehicle.

“M-m-my-” Chen Yue was also in disbelief. At a young age, she formed the impression that her adoptive mother had been through hell and back because of Chen Ping.

She had a hard time accepting that Chen Ping had abducted her adoptive mother. After all, Chen Ping did not imprison her. There were always options for her adoptive mother to escape after she was kidnapped, but she never did.

“It is clear that somebody used their influence to our benefit.” Yan Xin smiled knowingly.

He had no idea who was aiding him behind the scenes, but this strategy was standard operating procedure among the elite.

They could use a formal chain of crimes to exert power over someone. The defendant would have to serve a lengthy prison term regardless of the outcome of the trial and court proceedings.

Although ineffective against those who are well-connected and powerful, this strategy was ideal for thugs like Chen Ping.

“I did not think I would see this in real life…” Su Li was shocked.

“Is it over?” Cheng Zhen had already surmised the identity of their powerful backer..
