Season 2, Episode 10: 18 Miles Out

November 12th     Day 80

Rory walked over to the barn early in the morning. She slowly snuck into the shed and looked at Randall.

When he noticed her, he gasped. “Kid! Please, you have to let me out!”

Rory didn’t respond, looking unsure.

“Please, I won't hurt you guys!” Randall pleaded. “Is your family out there?”

“They're dead,” Rory said, Kat meowing from beside her.

“Cute cat,” Randall said, making small talk to try and change her mind. “What's its name?”

“Her name is Kat,” Rory smiled softly, looking down.

“She looks small,” Randall noted.

“She's a baby,” Rory informed, crouching down and picking up the cat.

“Hey!” Rory flinched when she heard a voice. Shane. He gripped her by the wrist in a bruising hold. “What the hell you doin’, huh?!”

“I was just—” Rory trembled, flinching as she recalled something else.

“Rory,” her mother called, looking over from the couch, “you're making dinner tonight.”

“I don't know how,” Rory said, walking over.

“Do I care?” Mother sneered. “You'll have to learn at some point.”

“But what if I–”

Mother grabbed Rory's wrist tightly in her grasp, dragging her over to the kitchen. “Cook!”

Rory nodded and swallowed nervously, grabbing a pan. She put it onto the stove and looked at Mother.

“Mam–”

“Ma'am.”

“Ma'am, what do I do now?”

Mother scoffed and rolled her eyes. “Turn on the element.”

“How?” Rory asked, hands shaking.

Mother stormed over, shoving Rory out of the way and turning on the stove herself. Rory fell to the ground, blinking back tears.

“Watch,” Mother ordered in that cold voice of hers. Once the pan was hot, Mother snatched Rory's wrist and pulled her up. “Stay still.”

Rory whimpered just as Mother grabbed the hot pan and pressed it against Rory's shoulder. Rory screamed in pain.

“Hey, let ‘er go!” Rory snapped out of her flashback as Daryl shouted. He shoved Shane away and pulled Rory away. She didn't notice the tears on her face until Daryl roared. “Do ya get a kick out of makin’ little girls cry?”

“I was protecting her,” Shane snapped. “She was talkin’ with Randall!”

“You don't rough handle her!” Daryl shouted. “She's been through enough trauma and doesn't need you addin’ to it!”

He took Rory away. He still scolded her for going to Randall, but he didn't touch her unless she was okay with it.

Rory sat beside Beth's bedside. Rick and Shane had left to take Randall miles out. Beth was showing more suicidal intentions and it was starting to worry Rory.
