Chapter 13: Pretty

A few months had passed, and the sunlight that streamed through Angel’s window felt almost like a miracle. For years, light had been a stranger to her, replaced by the cold shadows of pain and fear.

Angel adjusted her white skirt nervously, brushing her hands over the fabric to smooth it. The outfit was simple, just a white top, an off-white jacket, and her skirt, but it made her feel... pretty.

Pretty. That was a word she never thought would describe her.

Her delicate fingers trembled as she clasped her silver bracelet, her only piece of jewelry. It wasn’t much, but to Angel, it symbolized so much more.

She studied herself in the mirror. Her blonde hair framed her face softly, and her once dull, lifeless blue eyes sparkled faintly.

She tilted her head, her lips curving into a hesitant smile.

Is this really me? she thought.

The reflection felt like a stranger, yet it was undeniably her, a version she barely recognized. Gone were the bruises, the hollow cheeks, and the hopeless expression. Her life was unrecognizable now, a far cry from the nightmare it had been.

The memories surged without warning, sharp and bitter. The years of torment at the hands of her family, their cruel words and harsher punishments.

The dark days that followed her marriage, if one could even call it that. Her husband had been a monster in the truest sense, breaking her spirit in every way possible, leaving her broken physically and mentally. The scars he left weren’t just on her body but etched deeply into her soul.

A sudden gust of wind from the open window pulled her back to the present, rustling her hair.

She shook her head, pushing the memories away. That’s not my life anymore, she reminded herself firmly.

Downstairs, the smell of pancakes drifted through the air. Angel’s footsteps were soft, almost hesitant, as she made her way to the kitchen.

Sofia, her mother, stood at the stove, humming quietly as she flipped pancakes. Her warmth was palpable, filling the space with a comfort Angel hadn’t known for years.

“Good morning, Mama,” Angel said softly, her voice tinged with shyness.

Sofia turned, her eyes lighting up as she saw her daughter. “Good morning, my sweet girl! Look at you, you’re glowing!”

Angel blushed, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “Do you really think so?” she asked, her tone almost childlike.

Sofia placed a plate of pancakes in front of her and knelt down to brush a kiss on Angel’s forehead. “I know so. Now, eat up. You’ve got a busy day ahead.”

Angel ate in quiet gratitude, savoring every bite. She still wasn’t used to the kindness, the warmth, the love that Sofia gave her so freely.

After years of cold indifference and cruelty, it felt like stepping into a dream.

“Thank you, Mama,” she said softly after finishing her breakfast. “I’ll see you later!”
