#172: Happy birthday Ponyboy!

Yay!! Today is the day Ponyboy Curtis was born. Here are some fun facts from the book and movie and some random ones! Enjoy!

1// Ponyboy skipped 8th grade and went right into high school.

2// He used to be real close with Darry.

3// He would have joined Dally in messing around with Cherry and Marcia if they were greaser girls instead of socs.

4// (book) Ponyboy had terrible dreams that also scared Darry.

5// (book) He has greenish-grey eyes but wished they were more grey.

6// (movie) The first punch in the rumble scene was unscripted. It was meant to be thrown at Patrick Swayze, (Darry), and later Ponyboy's actor, (C. Thomas Howell), was spitting out blood from a loose tooth in his mouth. The actor who hit Howell apologized for "acting on impulse."

7// (movie) To help Rob Lowe (Sodapop), Patrick Swayze (Darry), and C. Thomas Howell (Ponyboy) to "create the sense of family," the director had them live in the Curtis house that they filmed.

8// (movie) Diane Lane (Cherry) said that C. Thomas Howell (Ponyboy) was making funny faces when the camera was only panned on her to try and break her concentration. Later on, C. Thomas Howell said that the director made him do it.

9// (movie) When Ponyboy and Johnny went to Buck's place seeking for Dally's help, the song "Jack Daniel's if You Please" by David Allen Coe was playing in the background and which was released in 1978, but the movie was set in 1965.

10// Ponyboy appears in "That Was Then, This is Now" by S.E. Hinton.

11// (book) When Ponyboy describes people's eyes, he's showing how he feels about their owner. For example, when he says Darry's eyes are cold, he's describing his discomfort about him.

12// Ponyboy was named after a song, "My Pony Boy" that came out in 1909 by Bobby Heath and Charlie O'Donnell and also named after a juice concentrate from the 50s called Pony Boy.
