it was quiet in sanctuary. as the cold sun was slowly setting on the bleak horizon, stars began to speckle the skyline. the bitter wind brushed through your hair and nipped at your ears as you sat back, shutting your eyes.

"rough day?" a voice that you knew all to well pipped up.

you ignored the presence of the person sitting next to you, their closeness making you uncomfortable.

"jeez, not even sparing a glance?" maccready laughed nervously. he shuffled, uncomfortably. he glanced over at you, watching you for a reaction. when you remained stoic and unresponsive, he sighed in resignation, bringing his gaze to the sky. "pretty out tonight, huh?"

silence stretched between the two of you— you, being oddly quiet (which was out of character for someone like you), and him, an awkward, flustered mess.

"you're such a good conversationalist." he flashed a sarcastic smile as he shifted in his spot, pulling a crumpled pack of cigarettes from the pocket of his jacket. he produced a single one, before offering it to you.

you shook your head, returning your gaze to the sky. he watched you for a moment in silence, studying you under the moonlight. you still hadn't given him a word.

a silence fell between you. maccready fidgeted, taking another long drag from his cigarette to keep himself occupied.

he tapped the ash from the end of the cigarette, letting it blow away with the harsh wind.

the words tumbled out of your mouth before you had a chance to think, as if they were desperate to escape the confines of your mind. "i'm sorry..." you finally manage to say, your voice cracking with the weight of your emotions.

"i've just been really confused," you continued, pausing to clear your throat. "with everything that's happened lately, with shaun and the death of my partner, and then your confession... it all feels like it's been thrown at me all at once, and i just don't know what to do."

he took another, longer, drag from his cigarette, a guilty look painted on his face. "i'm sorry, i shouldn't have dumped my problems on you." he replied solemnly, his eyes meeting yours.

he flicked the butt of the cigarette, watching the embers dance in the dark as it fell to the ground.

after a moment's silence, maccready looked at you again. "but, for what it's worth..." he dropped his voice to a whisper, his words soft like velvet. "i meant everything i said."

you press your lips into a tight line, struggling to find the right words to say. after a few moments of silence, you finally turn to gaze into his eyes.

"maccready," you manage to mutter, the words catching in your throat. "i still love my partner, but... i'm willing to give us a chance if you are."

maccready's face lit up, a surprised and happy look taking over his features. he blinked, as if processing what he'd heard you say.

"r-really?" he asked, a wide grin spreading across his face, unable to mask the happiness in his eyes.

"yes, really," you affirmed, a hint of a smile tugging at your lips.

he grinned wider, a soft chuckle escaping his lips. he reached forward, his hand slowly moving to gently cup the side of your face.

his touch was light, as if he still wasn't sure it was real, as if he would break you into a million pieces with his rough hands.

"i never thought i'd hear you say those words," he murmured, his thumb tracing gently across your skin. he leaned closer, a warm smile on his face. "but man, I'm glad you did..."
