"Like, are you guys something now?"

THE SUNLIGHT FILTERED through the broken blinds of the Château, casting uneven stripes across the cluttered living room. Dust particles danced in the air, illuminated by the golden rays, but the place was far from serene. John B sat on the worn-out couch, one arm draped over the backrest, his expression tense as his leg bounced nervously. JJ leaned against the counter, picking at the edge of the wood absently with his thumb, the air between them charged with unspoken frustration.

"Look, dude, you have to get over it," JJ said, his tone bordering on exasperation. His blue eyes flicked toward John B, daring him to argue.

"You don't get it—" John B started, his voice defensive.

"Man," JJ interrupted, standing straighter and gesturing with both hands, "there are more important things going on right now than your fifth-grade beef with Charlie. Seriously."

John B didn't respond immediately, just exhaled deeply and shook his head. The weight of the conversation seemed to settle heavier on his shoulders.

"V said it's either them both or none," JJ continued after a pause, trying to drive the point home. He moved away from the counter and dropped onto the armrest of the couch, letting his body sag slightly.

John B finally let out a bitter chuckle, his lips twisting into a sarcastic smirk. "Oh, so now you start to care because you're scared Vic will back out."

"It's not like that," JJ said, his voice firm as he leaned forward, bracing his elbows on his knees. "I promised her I'd talk to you, so that's what I'm doing."

John B sat up straighter, his frustration bubbling to the surface. "I'm telling you, I don't want him in this, and that's it," he said, jabbing a finger toward JJ for emphasis.

JJ threw his hands up in the air, clearly at the end of his rope. "Your point is so unreasonable, John B. Seriously, it's starting to get annoying—grow up."

"Is it starting to get annoying," John B shot back, his voice dripping with sarcasm, "or are you just kissing Vic's a—"

"Oh my God," JJ groaned, cutting him off and running a hand through his hair. "Stop with the V thing. You're just making a huge problem out of nothing."

John B's eyes narrowed, and he tilted his head slightly. "What's going on between you two?"

JJ froze for a split second, his foot tapping against the floor. "Stop avoiding Charlie's subject," he said firmly, trying to steer the conversation back.

"Stop avoiding Vic's subject," John B countered, leaning forward now, a knowing glint in his eye.

JJ sighed heavily, clearly torn between frustration and hesitation. "Nothing is going on, all right?"

"Yeah, right," John B said, his tone laced with disbelief.

JJ glared at him. "What do you mean, dude?"

"I mean, I can tell there's something. I'm not a dumbass," John B said, crossing his arms and settling back against the couch, his gaze locked on JJ.

JJ hesitated again, his jaw tightening as he glanced away. The silence between them stretched for a few moments, the only sound the distant rustle of leaves outside.

"Once again, no—" JJ started, but John B cut him off.

"JJ, we've been friends since forever. You can tell me," he pressed, his voice softer now, coaxing him into talking.
