Lucas gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white as he navigated the winding road back home. The sky outside had turned an ominous shade of gray, threatening a downpour. He could feel the storm coming—in more ways than one. The silence in the car was thick, only broken by the rhythmic swish of the windshield wipers against the glass. Amelia sat beside him, staring out the window, lost in her thoughts. He knew she had questions, and he wasn't sure he had all the answers she needed.
- Lucas? - her voice broke the silence, her eyes still focused on the passing trees.
- Yeah? - he replied, his voice quieter than usual, almost tentative.
- Do you think we'll ever have normal? Like, really normal? No unexpected guests, no past secrets creeping up on us? - Amelia asked, her tone laced with a vulnerability that twisted something deep inside Lucas.
He glanced at her, catching a glimpse of her profile—her furrowed brow, her lips slightly parted in worry. He hated seeing her like this, and he hated even more that he was the reason she felt this way.
- I wish I could promise you that - he said, his voice strained. - I wish I could say that nothing else will come between us, that we won't have to deal with more... surprises. But I can promise you that I'll always be here. No matter what happens.
Amelia turned to look at him, her eyes searching his. She nodded slowly, a soft smile tugging at her lips.
- That's all I need, Lucas. Just you - she whispered.
Lucas reached across the center console, his hand finding hers. He gave her fingers a gentle squeeze, his gaze returning to the road.
- Always - he said, his voice filled with conviction.
They drove in silence for a few more minutes before Lucas spoke again, his tone more relaxed this time.
- You know, there's this old diner up ahead. Used to stop there all the time when I needed a break from work. Best pie you'll ever have - he said, a hint of warmth creeping back into his voice.
Amelia's eyes lit up, a spark of curiosity replacing the sadness that had been there moments before.
- Pie, huh? You're trying to bribe me with dessert now? - she asked, a playful smile on her lips.
- Hey, whatever works, right? Besides, I know how much you love pie - Lucas teased, giving her a sideways glance.
Amelia laughed, a sound that filled the car and lightened the tension that had been suffocating them.
- Okay, fine. Let's stop for pie - she said, her voice carrying a note of surrender.
Lucas smiled, turning the wheel as he took the next exit. The neon sign of the diner came into view, flickering against the darkening sky. He pulled into the gravel parking lot, the tires crunching as they rolled to a stop. Amelia looked out at the small building, her heart warming at the sight of something so simple and comforting.
- I like this place already - she said as they stepped out of the car, the wind catching her hair and tossing it around her face.
Lucas walked over to her, reaching out to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
- I thought you might - he said softly.
They walked toward the entrance, the bell above the door chiming as they stepped inside. The diner was almost empty, save for a waitress leaning against the counter and a man nursing a cup of coffee in the corner booth. The warmth of the place enveloped them, and Amelia felt herself relaxing even more.
The waitress looked up, her face brightening at the sight of Lucas.
- Well, I'll be! Lucas, is that you? - she called out, her Southern drawl unmistakable.
