The night had settled into a deep darkness, with only the occasional headlight illuminating the road ahead. Lucas parked the car outside the small cabin, turning off the engine and sitting in silence for a moment. The air felt heavy, weighed down by everything that had happened in the past few weeks. Amelia looked over at him, sensing the tension in his shoulders.
- Are you sure about this place? - she asked, her voice soft but tinged with curiosity.
Lucas nodded, his eyes fixed on the cabin's dim outline. It wasn't much to look at, a modest building nestled in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the thick woods. But it was a place where they could take a breath, even if just for a short while.
- It's not fancy, but it's safe. And right now, that's what we need - Lucas replied, turning to meet her gaze. There was something in his eyes—a mix of determination and weariness that pulled at Amelia's heart.
She nodded, understanding what he meant without needing to say anything more. They got out of the car, the crunch of gravel beneath their shoes breaking the silence of the night. Lucas walked ahead, unlocking the cabin door and pushing it open. The hinges creaked, and Amelia felt a shiver run down her spine as they stepped inside.
- I know it's not much, but we'll make it work - Lucas said, flicking on the lights. A soft yellow glow filled the room, revealing a sparse but cozy space. A small couch sat against one wall, a few shelves lined with old books, and a fireplace that looked like it hadn't been used in years.
Amelia walked over to the couch, running her fingers along the worn fabric. She glanced at Lucas, who was busy checking the windows, making sure they were locked.
- It's perfect - she said, her voice filled with warmth. - I'm just glad to be here with you.
Lucas paused, looking over at her. He took a deep breath, the tension in his shoulders slowly easing. He walked over to her, his eyes softening as he reached for her hand.
- I'm glad you're here too, Amelia. I know this isn't how we planned things, but... we're going to be okay - he said, his voice filled with quiet conviction.
Amelia smiled, squeezing his hand. She knew he was trying to reassure her, but she also knew that he needed the reassurance just as much. She leaned in, resting her head against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
- I trust you, Lucas. No matter what happens, I trust you - she whispered.
Lucas closed his eyes, wrapping his arms around her. For a moment, the world outside seemed to fade away, leaving only the warmth of her embrace and the quiet promise they shared.
A sudden knock at the door broke the silence, and they both tensed. Lucas pulled away, his eyes narrowing as he looked toward the door.
- Stay here - he said, his voice low as he moved toward the door.
Amelia's heart pounded as she watched him approach the door, his hand resting on the doorknob. He took a deep breath before pulling it open, revealing a figure standing in the shadows.
- Lucas? - the voice was familiar, and Lucas's eyes widened in surprise.
- Travis? What are you doing here? - Lucas asked, his tone a mix of shock and suspicion.
The man stepped into the light, revealing his face. Travis looked worn, his clothes dusty, and his eyes filled with a mix of desperation and relief.
- I had nowhere else to go. I know I shouldn't have come, but... I need your help - Travis said, his voice cracking.
Lucas glanced back at Amelia, who was now standing, her eyes wide with concern. He turned back to Travis, his jaw tightening.
- You shouldn't be here. It's not safe—for any of us - Lucas said, his voice firm.
