The barn was dimly lit, the single bulb hanging from the ceiling swaying slightly, casting long shadows across the floor. Lucas stood at the center of the room, his arms crossed over his chest as he watched Victor pace back and forth. There was a tension in the air that seemed to thicken with each passing moment. Marcus leaned against the wall, his eyes narrowed, while Amelia sat on a wooden crate, her gaze fixed on Travis, who looked lost in his own thoughts.
- So, let me get this straight - Lucas finally spoke, his voice cutting through the silence. - You don't know exactly what the key opens, but you know it's important. Important enough that they're willing to kill for it?
Victor paused, turning to face Lucas. He let out a slow sigh, nodding.
- That's right. I've been around these people long enough to know when they're desperate. And right now, they're desperate. They want that key, and they'll stop at nothing to get it - Victor said, his voice filled with a sense of urgency.
Amelia shifted, her gaze turning to Victor.
- But why? What's so special about this key? What are they hoping to find? - she asked, her voice laced with frustration.
Victor shook his head, his expression grim.
- I wish I knew. All I know is that it leads to something big. Something that could give them power—more power than they already have. And trust me, you don't want these people having that kind of power - he said.
Travis looked up, his face pale, his eyes wide with fear.
- I don't understand. I was just trying to get away from them. I didn't ask for any of this - he said, his voice trembling.
Lucas walked over to Travis, placing a hand on his shoulder, his gaze softening.
- I know, Travis. But we're in this now, and we have to deal with it. We're not going to let them get that key. We're going to find out what it opens, and we're going to make sure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands - he said, his voice steady.
Victor watched them, his brow furrowed.
- It's not going to be easy. These people are well-connected. They have resources—money, influence. If we're going to take them on, we're going to need help - he said.
Marcus pushed off the wall, his arms unfolding as he took a step forward.
- What kind of help are we talking about? - he asked, his voice filled with skepticism.
Victor hesitated for a moment, his gaze shifting to Marcus.
- There's someone I know. Someone who used to be on the inside. They got out a few years ago, but they still have connections. If anyone can help us, it's them - he said.
Lucas narrowed his eyes, his expression cautious.
- And you trust this person? - he asked.
Victor gave a small nod, his eyes filled with determination.
- As much as you can trust anyone in this line of work. They've got a reason to want these people taken down. If we can find them, they'll help us - he said.
Amelia stood up, her eyes locking onto Victor's.
- Where do we find them? - she asked, her voice filled with determination.
Victor glanced at her, then at Lucas.
- They're not far from here. About an hour's drive, maybe less. But it's risky. If anyone's watching us, they'll know where we're going - he said.
Lucas exchanged a glance with Amelia, his jaw tightening.
- We'll take that risk. We can't afford to wait around any longer. The longer we stay in one place, the more dangerous it becomes - he said.
