The fire crackled in the corner of the cabin, casting flickering shadows across the walls. Lucas sat on the edge of the couch, his elbows resting on his knees, his hands clasped tightly. The weight of the situation hung heavy in the room, and he could feel the tension building in the silence. Amelia sat across from him, her eyes fixed on the fire, her thoughts far away. It had been a long day, and the night ahead promised no rest.
The door to the spare room creaked open, and Travis stepped out, his face etched with exhaustion. He glanced between Lucas and Amelia, his eyes lingering on their weary expressions.
- I couldn't sleep - Travis admitted, his voice rough. - I kept thinking about everything... and I can't help but feel like I've dragged you both into something you don't deserve.
Lucas looked up, his gaze meeting Travis's. He could see the fear behind his friend's eyes, the regret that had been eating away at him.
- We're here now, Travis. What matters is figuring out how to move forward - Lucas said, his tone calm but firm.
Amelia shifted in her seat, turning her attention to Travis. Her voice was gentle, yet it carried an edge of determination.
- You mentioned that they're after something they think you have. We need to know everything, Travis. If we're going to help you, we need to understand what we're up against - she said.
Travis nodded, his shoulders sagging as he walked over to the fireplace. He stared at the flames for a moment before speaking, his voice barely above a whisper.
- It started a few years ago. I got involved with a group—people I thought were just interested in making easy money. It turned out they were into a lot more than that. Smuggling, extortion... you name it, they were doing it. I was just a small part of it, but I ended up seeing things I shouldn't have - he said, his voice trembling slightly.
Lucas exchanged a glance with Amelia, his jaw tightening. He could hear the fear in Travis's voice, the desperation of someone who had been running for far too long.
- What do they think you took from them? - Lucas asked, his voice low.
Travis swallowed hard, his eyes still fixed on the fire.
- It's a ledger. It has information about their operations—names, transactions, locations. I didn't take it, but they think I did. I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I tried to tell them that, but they won't listen. They think I'm lying - he said, his voice filled with frustration.
Amelia leaned forward, her eyes filled with concern.
- And now they're after you because they think you have it? - she asked.
Travis nodded, his face etched with worry.
- They won't stop until they get it. I've tried to disappear, but they keep finding me. I thought if I came here, if I could just get a little time, I'd figure out what to do next - he said, his voice breaking.
Lucas stood up, his eyes narrowing as he paced across the room. He knew what Travis was saying was true, and he knew the danger they were in. He could feel the weight of responsibility pressing down on him—for Travis, for Amelia, for the promises he had made.
- We need to be smart about this. If they think you have that ledger, they're not going to back off until they find it or find you. We need to figure out how to get them off your trail - Lucas said, his voice filled with determination.
Amelia stood up, walking over to Lucas and placing a hand on his arm. He looked at her, his expression softening slightly as their eyes met.
- We'll figure it out, Lucas. We always do - she said, her voice steady.
