The sun had begun its descent, casting long shadows across the forest as the group pressed forward along the winding road. Lucas kept his focus on the stretch of gravel ahead, his eyes narrowed as he maneuvered the vehicle carefully. The tension within the car had grown heavier, as each member of their small group was lost in their own thoughts, the weight of the uncertainty ahead bearing down on them.
Marcus, seated in the back, leaned against the window, his gaze distant. He hadn't said much since they left the cabin, and the silence from him was unsettling. Travis fidgeted next to him, his foot tapping nervously against the floor of the car, while Amelia sat beside Lucas, her eyes flickering between her companions, her lips pressed into a thin line.
The sudden crackle of the radio snapped the silence, causing them all to jump slightly. Lucas cursed under his breath, reaching out to turn the volume down, and glanced at Amelia, giving her a reassuring nod.
- We're close - Marcus said, his voice breaking the silence. He leaned forward, looking at Lucas. - There's an old gas station a couple of miles ahead. We should stop there, make sure we're not being followed.
Lucas gave a curt nod, his eyes never leaving the road.
- Good idea. We'll make a quick stop, check everything out, and keep moving - he said.
Amelia turned to Marcus, her brows furrowing slightly.
- Are you sure this contact of yours can be trusted? We can't afford any mistakes right now - she said, her voice tinged with worry.
Marcus sighed, his gaze shifting to meet hers.
- He's not the kind of guy you trust completely, but he's got his reasons for wanting to help. And he owes me a favor. It's the best shot we've got - he said.
Travis looked up, his expression filled with a mix of hope and fear.
- What if he's wrong? What if this guy turns on us? - he asked, his voice trembling slightly.
Lucas glanced in the rearview mirror, his gaze meeting Travis's for a brief moment.
- We take it one step at a time. We can't let fear make our decisions for us. We'll be careful, and we'll handle whatever comes our way - he said, his voice steady.
The gas station came into view, a small, dilapidated building with a single pump standing at its side. Lucas pulled the car to a stop, turning off the engine and glancing around, his eyes scanning the area for any signs of movement. The place looked deserted, the windows of the building dark and covered in grime.
- Stay alert. I'll check it out first - Lucas said, his tone commanding.
Amelia nodded, her eyes following him as he stepped out of the car. She watched as Lucas made his way toward the building, his movements careful, his eyes never still. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest, the uncertainty of their situation gnawing at her.
Travis shifted in his seat, his eyes darting around nervously.
- Do you think it's safe? - he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Amelia looked at him, her expression softening slightly.
- Lucas knows what he's doing. He won't let anything happen to us - she said, her voice filled with conviction.
Marcus opened the car door, stepping out slowly and glancing around. He walked over to the pump, his eyes scanning the area before turning back to the car.
- We should fill up while we can. No telling when we'll get another chance - he said, his voice low.
Amelia nodded, stepping out of the car and walking over to help. Travis followed, his eyes still darting around, his unease palpable. They worked quickly, Marcus keeping watch while Amelia filled the tank, her hands steady despite the fear that gnawed at her insides.
