Third Person POV
"Honestly, this thing deserves a medal" Noel said as her hands rested lightly on the handles of the wheel chair.
Cyrus huffed out a quiet breath that might've been a laugh.
"A medal?"
"Yeah" she nodded, steering him carefully along the stone path. "First it carried Damien, then me, now it's you. At this point it's basically a family heirloom."
"It's a wheelchair"
"It's a survivor" she corrected. "Been through gunshots in the legs, bad decisions, your attitude-"
"My attitude?" he muttered.
"-and somehow, still functioning" she finished, ignoring him completely. "That's impressive"
The evening air was calm, the kind that made everything feel slower than it actually was. The garden stretched out quietly around them, untouched by the noise that usually followed their lives.
For a moment, it almost felt normal.
Cyrus tilted his head back slightly, eyes following the fading light.
"You're wrong"
The shift was immediate.
Noel didn't stop walking right away.
"About what?" she asked lightly.
"About the undercover plan"
That did it. She slowed, then stopped completely.
"How the hell do you know about that?"
"It doesn't matter how I know, I just know"
Noel moved around to the front of the wheelchair, and faced the man sitting on it, and.
"Well that's a strong opening." she said. "You get air for the first time and you choose violence?"
"I'm serious, Noel"
"So am I"
He watched her.
She looked relaxed, too relaxed.
"You're not refusing because the plan is flawed" he said.
Noel tilted her head.
"That's exactly why I'm refusing"
"No" Cyrus said. "That's the excuse"
Her expression didn't change much, but her eyes did.
"You've been awake for what, two minutes." she said "And you've already decided you understand me?"
"I don't need two days" he replied. "I've known you long enough"
She held his gaze. Then looked away first.
A small shift, barely noticeable but it was there.
"You don't know what you're talking about" she said.
Cyrus didn't push immediately.
He adjusted slightly in the chair, ignoring the way his body protested.
"You said it yourself" he continued. "You're a known variable"
Noel exhaled lightly.
"That's not new information."
"But the way you're using it is"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means you're hiding behind it"
