Picture of Luma above:
My mom ties a bow into the back of my dress, making it perfect. My dress is loose, and seems old fashioned. It is grey with lace, and goes down just above my knees. It stops around my elbow area and has a circle cut collar. The dress is all tied together with a small thin ribbon around my waist that gets tied in my back which is exposed down to my lower back. I stare into the mirror and look at myself. My hair is tamed and let lose down my back, and I have a light amount of makeup, pale lipstick, and mascara. My short dress is occupied with tights that cover up my scrapes and cuts, and down at my feet are black heels. My aunt works on making two side braids on each side of my hair. That connect in the back. I study myself more and realize I look like the sot that covers our sky's and our streets.
"This is what I wore to your aunts wedding. Good thing it fits you." My mom says picking something up from her closet. She takes out the box full of jewelry that she keeps hidden in a small secret doorway in there protecting it from thieves. She picks out a locket and smiles. She carefully puts it around my neck.
"Your father gave this to me." She said. I opened it up to see a old picture of my mother when she was young. Everyone says I look just like her, but when they look at my eyes they see my father. I put it back together as my aunt finishes my hair.
"It's almost time." My aunt says. "Go, go, we'll watch from the tv." I get two hugs before I walk outside to join the women walking down the street. They all look the same age as me. I study a few of them as I walk to the square of our district.
Fairy lights, and star lights, aluminate the square. They never have anything like this up, so I take it all in. I walk to a table, with DNA testers.
"Name." She says. "Luma Dolores Donaldson." I say as she pricks my finger.
"Ok go ahead." She says crossing out my name and giving me a number. I walk into the crowd, looking at the stage.
"Boo!" A familiar voice says scaring me.
"Wtf GG." I say making her laugh more. GG my best friend since kindergarten. She thinks she a comedian or something. "Hey that was funny, come on." She says. I sigh shaking my head. She flicks her ginger hair and says "you know why they gave us numbers."
"Because they have a jar full of numbers, that gives us a chance!" She says excitably. I sigh not wanting to be apart of this anymore. Just then the mayor and a guy from the center come out.
"Hello district of coal." The blonde man says. "Tonight I will be taking a number out and if you have that number then you are the girl district coal is offering." The crowd screams. I sigh, and shake my head. The man puts his hand in, moving it around carefully. He picks something one out and goes to the microphone.
"Number 4." He says, echoing it throughout the square. I look down at my number.
"Well who is it." I look up in shock and raise my hand. Everyone looks at me and I hold up the number 4. The square claps, and I walk over up to the stage. My legs are shaking as I stare out into the crowd.
"Name." The man says smiling. "Luma Donaldson."
"Well Luma, you sure are a pretty one." He say staring at my eyes. "Luma Donaldson, possibly one of the new rulers wife." The crowd screams, and claps and I stand dazed in confused, looking grey like sot.
