Ayaan stood by the door, his hand lingering on the handle, his eyes lingering on Maya. She was resting on the couch, her eyes closed, a faint smile on her face as she drifted in and out of sleep. Ayaan had received the call from the mafia, the demand was urgent, and he had no choice but to leave. He knew Maya wasn’t completely better, but the situation couldn’t wait.
“I’ll be back as soon as I can,” he said softly, but Maya was too exhausted to fully hear him. She just nodded weakly, not wanting to cause him more stress.
“Take care of yourself,” she mumbled, though the words were laced with concern for him rather than herself.
Ayaan kissed her forehead softly, his mind torn. He hated leaving her like this, but his family and empire couldn’t afford to fall apart.
“Maya, I’m leaving you in Priya’s care,” he said, his voice serious. “She’ll make sure you’re alright. You don’t need to worry.”
Maya, still in her foggy state, gave a half-hearted smile. “I’ll be fine, Ayaan. Go handle your business.”
But in her heart, she knew she wasn’t fully okay. She wasn’t feeling herself—she hadn’t been for days—but she didn’t want to burden him.
Ayaan hesitated for a moment longer, his gaze flickering to her before he turned away, his steps heavy. He didn’t want to leave, but duty called.
The next few days were a blur for Maya. She hadn’t gotten better as she had hoped. In fact, she felt worse. Her symptoms only grew stronger. She was constantly exhausted, lightheaded, and felt nauseous all the time. Her body was protesting, her energy levels completely drained.
Priya noticed the changes and, with a worried glance at Arjun, decided to take matters into her own hands. She insisted on taking Maya to the doctor, but Maya resisted at first.
“I’ll be fine, Priya. Really,” Maya tried to dismiss it, but Priya could see right through her.
“Maya, you’ve been sick for too long. Let’s just check, okay?” Priya urged, her voice filled with a gentle but firm insistence.
Reluctantly, Maya agreed, too tired to argue, and they left for the doctor’s office with Arjun accompanying them.
At the doctor’s office, Maya sat in the examination room, feeling like everything was spinning. She barely noticed the doctor as he spoke with Priya and Arjun before conducting a few tests. She was too weak to protest, and the moments felt like they stretched into eternity.
It was after a few moments when the doctor returned, a small smile tugging at his lips.
“Maya,” he began, his tone warm, “Congratulations. You’re pregnant.”
For a moment, everything seemed to freeze around Maya. She blinked, trying to comprehend what she had just heard.
Pregnant?
Priya and Arjun’s faces lit up with joy. They exchanged a look of happiness and excitement before turning back to Maya. Priya grinned, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
“Oh my God, Maya! You’re going to be a mother!” she exclaimed, her voice filled with joy.
Arjun chuckled, his face glowing with happiness. “Ayaan will be thrilled.”
But Maya remained in shock. She felt numb as she processed the words. A baby? She didn’t know what to think. She wasn’t sure if she should be happy or scared.
“Pregnant…” she whispered to herself, her voice barely audible. The weight of the news was overwhelming.
Priya and Arjun couldn’t contain their excitement. “This is wonderful, Maya!” Priya said, her eyes filled with joy. “You and Ayaan are going to be such great parents.”
