~ Chapter Three ~

T

he following day I saw just how much Devon had changed in the past two years. When I walked into school as Ryan dropped us off, with a very pointed look at me and a wink, I saw Devon completely surrounded by girls, all of whom were either friends with me or were part of the school’s cheer leading group. I don’t know what possessed our school to enter in the cheer leading business. In my personal opinion, I don’t see it as a sport, but I do see it as a very good way to get your flexibility up and a very good way to stay fit. It was an all-season fitness routine. I’d tried it once, for kicks, liked it, but found it wasn’t something that I was willing to continue with.

I cringed as Devon’s gaze wandered over to me as I entered with Hayley and I saw the look on his face change from flirtatious to annoyed in a matter of seconds. Hayley stopped talking and followed my gaze and saw Devon looking at me and I him. She placed an arm around my shoulders and steered me towards the lockers.

“Come on,” she said in a quiet voice as I saw her shoot Devon an angered look over my shoulder. I allowed her to lead me towards her locker before I asked her what that was about.

“What was that all about?” I asked her as I leant against the lockers besides hers and looked at her curiously.

She shrugged her shoulders as she unlocked her locker and stuffed her things inside and pointedly looked away from me and at her books inside.

“I just think you didn’t need to see that on your second day back,” she said to me, her voice sounding apologetic as she turned to glance at me briefly before glancing over my shoulder as I spoke to her, ignoring what I said next.

“Well, it’s not like I wasn’t going to se it, Hayley. Its better that I’ve seen it early rather than later. I probably would have yelled at him if I had seen it later on,” I said as I looked up from the floor and at her face. She wasn’t even listening to me!

“Hails? What are you looking at?” I asked as I turned around and followed where her eyes were looking.

I spotted Joshua Sanders, yet another one of our famous footballers, standing with a mate of his at his locker and he seemed to be looking at . . . me?

I looked around myself and found that the only other person in the corridor beside myself, him and his mate was Hayley. I looked back at Hayley and saw that she had turned back to her locker and was busying herself with making her locker all neat and tidy. I looked at her with a confused look on my face and went to ask her a question, but my question turned into a gasp when a hand came down and rested on my shoulder, startling me. I whirled around in a flurry of hair and looked at the person, surprised to find myself looking into a very bright pair of green eyes.

I tried to step back and ran into the lockers as I looked this person up and down, realising at the last second as my eyes stayed on his nicely toned torso a little longer than the rest of him, was the fact that Josh was standing in front of me, his eyes looking at me rather hungrily.

“Um . . . Hi,” I say in a quiet voice as he looks me up and down once before looking back up and meeting my gaze.

“When did you get purple contacts, Aza?” he asked me and I shivered at the sound of his voice. I hadn’t heard that in a while and everything was still different to me.

I wasn’t used to people just coming up and talking to me, but Josh had been Devon’s friend, a close friend and he’d been around since grade three.

“Um . . . I didn’t. These are my natural eye colour,” I said as I tried to lean back but cringing when I realise I can’t go any further back as he leans further in.
