~ Chapter Five ~

he following two days were as weird as all hell. Firstly, Josh seemed determined to get me alone, but I made sure that I was surrounded by people who I knew he wouldn’t talk to and the only time he managed to get my to himself was during English, in which I refused to talk to him unless we were brainstorming the actual story. Otherwise, we remained silent, thinking about our characters.

And secondly, Hayley decided on Friday night when she was over at my house to take me shopping for a dress for Erin’s party.

“Come on Aza! It’ll be fun. When was the last time you went shopping for anything besides groceries and ice-cream?” she asked me as we sat on my bed. I shrugged my shoulders and threw a candy at her, which when she caught it in her mouth, I scowled at her.

“That’s none of your business, and besides. I have plenty of dresses that I can wear to Erin’s party,” I said and Hayley glared at me.

“None of which are very appropriate for a seventeenth birthday party. I’m taking you shopping and that’s final! Ryan’s offered to drive us there when we’re ready because he has to get a couple of things and he wants our help in picking out a gift for Erin,” she said and I nearly choked on my mouthful of water. I swallowed quickly and gaped at her.

“Since when does your brother offer to drive us anywhere?” I asked as I heard a car pull up in my driveway and I scurried over to the window to see who it was.

And sure enough, there was Ryan standing beside his little red sports convertible dressed in a pair of ripped jeans and a T-shirt. He had a jacket draped over his left arm and he looked up at my window and smiled when he spotted me looking out. He raised a hand and waved at me. I quickly ducked back inside and looked at Hayley.

“He’s already here!” I hissed at her as I scurried around for a pair of jeans and a nice top.

“Really? He said he wouldn’t be here for another hour,” she said in confusion as she hurried over to the window and peeked out as I pulled my jeans onto myself and stuffed myself into a grey singlet top.

I quickly ran my brush through my hair and glared at Hayley when she started to laugh. I grabbed her hand and dragged her downstairs with me and I opened the door, surprised to find Ryan standing right there. He smiled at me.

“You girls ready to go?” he asked as he glanced at Hayley and then returned his gaze back to me. I nodded my head before replying.

“I am, but I’m not sure about Hayley. I don’t even know why she’s making me come along in the first place,” I said as I turned around and glared at her. She laughed before grabbing her bag from where it sat beside the door and smiled at me.

“I’m ready,” she said as she skipped past me and her brother and yelled over her shoulder as she ran towards his car. “I call shotgun!”

“Awww,” I said as I shut the door and locked it. I sent mum a quick text saying that Hayley was forcing me to go shopping for a dress for Erin’s party.

That’s great sweetie. Have fun! She replied back and I scowled at my phone as I sat in the back seat of Ryan’s car. Why couldn’t she be one of those parents who forbid their daughters to not go out shopping for dresses, just for a friend’s birthday?

We arrived and Hayley dragged me into practically every store until we found the right dress. It was haltered and it was a dark blue in colour. The only unfortunate thing, beside the fact that it was way too short for my liking, was that it was sparkled as well.
