~ Chapter Seven ~
I
woke up the following morning feeling extremely hot as I tried to roll over. But something prevented me from turning over. I began to feel panicky as I turned my face to see what was preventing me from rolling over and started when I saw Devon lying beside me, his arm wrapped tightly around my waist. When I had moved, he groaned in his sleep and pulled me closer to him, seemingly not wanting to let me go.
I looked down at his face and smiled softly. He looked so sweet and innocent as he stirred in his sleep, moving over and resting his head on my chest, his breathing even as he falls still and continues to sleep. There was nothing I could do to move away from him without waking him. I looked over at the clock on my bedside table and started when I saw the day and time. It was Sunday and I had my netball practice in two hours. I looked back down at Devon again and a sad expression crossed my face. I had to get up and get ready. I looked around the room, searching for Hayley to get her help, but didn’t find her anywhere. I heard her voice coming from downstairs and I cursed under my breath. Just my luck.
I tried again to move his arm from around my waist, but he just groaned and pulled my closer to him, his mouth resting really close to my breasts. I mean uncomfortably close to them. As if he had sensed this, he turned his head in his sleep and opened his mouth, his tongue coming out and just barely grazing the surface of the skin exposed. That was when I hit him.
I hit him hard and in the side of his stomach. The air whooshed out of his lungs as my fist connected with his side and he let go of me automatically. I leapt out of bed, my heart pounding as the memories of Erin’s party last night came suddenly rushing back into my mind and I almost let out a small whimper. I clamped my hand over my mouth before it could escape and tears began to form in my eyes and roll down my cheeks silently.
I quickly turned around when he sat up and looked at me, not wanting him to see me breaking down. I still had my hand clamped firmly over my mouth and I was trying to keep my shoulders from shaking as I took a deep breath in.
“Aza?” I heard him ask quietly as I heard him get up and walk over to me.
I quickly wiped the tears away from my eyes and off of my cheeks before he placed a hand on my shoulder and turned me around to face him. He got a startled expression on his face when he looked at mine and before I could say anything he pulled me into a tight hug.
I pulled away from him as quickly as I could, a fresh wave of tears beginning to fall down my cheeks and I turned away from him, wrapping my arms around myself and allowing the tears to fall silently down my cheeks. I felt him go to place a hand on my shoulder, but then he sighed and his hand dropped to his side.
“Aza? What’s wrong?” I heard him ask but I didn’t respond, the silent sobs making it hard for me to say anything. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I had calmed myself down enough to talk again.
“Has . . . Has anyone told my mother?” I asked in a cautious voice, turning my head to the side so I could look at Devon through the corner of my eyes. He shook his head before replying.
“No. No one’s told her what happened. She wasn’t even home when we got home, Aza. Neither was your father, although, he’s guessed what’s happened,” he began and I turned around to face him, my hair flying about my face and some of it sticking to my face where the tears were still falling.
“What do you mean he guessed?” I demanded and Devon flinched. My tone was sharp and it even sounded cruel to my ears, so it was no surprise that he flinched.
