Ambulance Escape ⤵
The plan was ongoing. Owen came up with the plan, went through it, and went through it again. He didn't want to take any chances that Hoskins was selling him out on his own plan; plotting something behind Owens back.
He double-checked that everyone knew perfectly clear to not hit the Raptors. Not only were they an asset to the park and highly dangerous out of containment, but they were Owen's Raptors. The amount of care and trust he felt for those extinct reptiles was beyond comprehension.
Everyone nodded, slowly lowering their taser sticks and tranquilizer guns. Owen glared at Hoskins over a few shoulders, then rolled the map back up. The soldiers spread out, grabbing he rest of their gear for the call out. Barry rounded the Paddock, likely to check the headsets on the Raptors.
Owen stomped a boot on the ground. His muscles flexed through the back of the leather vest. With the map of the park rolled in his palm, he turned and bonked the top of my head with the other end. ''You're staying here with Claire and the kids.''
My head instinctively bounced downwards at the bonk, then upwards again as if the paper held a huge impact of a hit. He now leaned against the table, front facing mine.
''I assumed I would be.'' I sighed. Sleep deprivation taking it's toll in the long run. I felt drained... utterly tired; too tired to run if the need be. ''I quit babysitting when I was 18, only to come here and start that train again.''
He chortled, pulling up the left side of his facials into a grin. ''Tired of the drool and sticky fingers?''
''Too boring. Couldn't stand going straight from 18 to 20 without having a life outside parenthood and a household.'' Shrugging, I take a step closer. ''That's why I got the job at the Safari Park. Not only was I experienced with animals, but it wasn't as boring as getting crayons out of children's noses.''
''It's always fun when you gotta find the missing pieces to a board game.'' His arms flexed at the elbow, twisting around one another to cross over his chest. The blueprints of the island still grasped in his left palm.
I laughed, throwing my head back a smidge. Too much would ache my shoulder. ''That's why board games were banned in my household. Little Jimmy ate one of the Monopoly pieces and we never found it since.''
''Which one?''
''The shoe.''
Owen smiled. ''How'd that happen?''
''Long story.'' Owen leaned off the table, now standing upright. I glanced down at the blueprint. ''Hope this works.''
''It will work.'' By the tone, he sounded so sure of himself. I could never understand how. The Raptors were his, and listened to him without fault, sure.. but what was to happen if his Raptors met an immoveable object? What would happen if the Raptors suddenly decided they didn't need human to entrap them anymore?
Would Owen be safe in all that chaos? Especially with his Raptors, would he defend or fight them?
I blinked more than I should've. Owen was reading my mind with the look he gave me. His head lolled to the side, weight shifting to the same side of the hip. ''Nothing will go wrong. If Hoskin's men follow the plan, we'll take that thing out and come right back.''
