chapter 13: till my last breath

[ "If Athena were here she'd say we didn't wanna cause any trouble, But I'm sure we all know that's a lie."

"Yeah." ]

They courted for almost twelve months. It was long and kind of exhausting for the people around them, but for Katerina Petrova and Luciana Edwards, it was just right.

They had all the time in the world to love each other. There was no rush.

Their biggest worry had been Niklaus, and now he seemed to have mellowed out about what Katerina did.

They were happy and that's all that mattered. (Athena reminded the others of that daily whenever one of them would complain.)

So, when Katerina asked Athena and Rebekah to craft a ring one day, the blonde had practically leapt for joy. The two had agreed almost immediately, and the three discussed how Katerina wished for it to look and if there were any spells she wished them to put on it.

It took them a month to make it perfect. Katerina wishing to change it every other week, being a perfectionist over the important life decision that was about to occur.

But eventually, they had created the ring that left Katerina beaming with pride and joy. One that they were all sure Luciana couldn't resist.

"I wish I had met you all sooner. Or been born earlier."

Katerina turned to look at her girl, the only person who could capture her attention more than the beautiful sky above her. "What do you mean?" She asked curiously.

Luciana turned her head to meet Katerina's gaze, one of the vampire's hands clasped tightly between the witch's on her stomach. "I wish that we had met before that man you had your child with," she said softly and the brunette's brows furrowed, looking even more confused, "I mean... I just... I wish you hadn't experienced such heartbreak from people you loved. I wish I had been around then and perhaps—"

"My love," Katerina interrupted, smiling softly as she leaned up on her elbow, "I appreciate the sentiment, but I think we've met when we were supposed to. My experiences have made me who I am today. Yes, most of it sucked and do I regret a lot of things? Of course. Though, I would never trade the life I have now—I have you, I have my best friend... I have a family. Who loves me endlessly. That is more than I could ever ask for."

Luciana smiled at the woman, leaning up to kiss her gently. "You are right. I am sorry. I would not trade what I have either," she murmured, squeezing Katerina's hand. The vampire kissed the witch's forehead. "Do you ever wonder about your child?" She asked gently after a couple of moments.

Katerina's eyes turned sad, "Everyday. Though, she is long gone now. I am not even sure if she survived after her second birthday. I like to think she did, and that she got to live a fulfilling life. Got married and had children of her own... Became a menace to society, worked, did whatever she wished to do... but I am unsure."
