Calling for a War

Reader's P.O.V.

The week went by with a lot dead-ends and frustration. Gakupo had to stay off of this and heal both mentally and physically. His ribs still weren't in the best condition and with having his sister taken? He was an absolute mess. When he had the strength, he'd help Len get into contact with some of our allies and Len would pass them onto us. Since neither of them were doing well, Momo stepped in to help as a nurse. All three were off field duty.

Ia, Piko, and Miki were working on securing a new location for us, so Len and Gakupo safely bounced from one motel to another until Miki could land a good place for a good price.

The rest of us paired up and went around town, asking vague questions to our closer allies on our territories. Rin and Teto were walking around, trying to find some new leads, Miku and Leon were trying to get some answers, and when I was with Meiko, if and when our allies got to asking too many questions, she would slip them money with a thinly veiled threat. When I was with Gumi, she was much more fierce and pulled her knife out on people telling them to keep it shut. Either way, almost nobody had any information...

We were searching for which gang was targeting us specifically. We had to single out the weaker ones... they weren't as calculating to attack and kidnap and would have come up to us first and foremost.

If push came to shove, there's no way they'd go down without their other gangs and allies backing them up. We had to find out who to see just how much they would overpower us. Something awfully bad felt like it was just about to pop up, but none of us were sure what it was. It was only a matter of time and we all waited with bated breath.

While Meiko and I were wandering around, we stopped by a draft house for lunch. She walked up to the counter and went over the lunch specials.

"You can have whatever you want for lunch. No beers, though." she nudged me with her shoulder and winked jokingly. I smiled and picked out what I wanted. We placed our order and were given our cups. She went onto the soda machine and picked a cherry flavored soda. I picked what I wanted and she told me to choose where to sit. I chose a booth by a window.

We plopped down opposite of one another, our feet aching from such a difficult week. She dropped the grass straw into her soda and began drinking mindlessly, looking over at the TV. The cheerleaders were cheering the team on, occasionally shaking the pompoms at the camera as they hopped around. I heard Meiko snicker and I raised an eyebrow at her.

"What's so funny?" I asked. She shook her head and pointed up at the ceiling. I didn't understand what was going on and looked up, admiring the wacky decor. Cute! But back to Meiko laughing!

"I don't get..."

I stopped midway as I heard the song playing on the intercom. "Born This Way" was playing and I couldn't help but glance around questioningly.

"Miss Sakane, are you laughing at the song?" I asked. She shook her head, but she was holding back her bubbling laughter. I frowned, a little confused, but she held up her hands and stopped laughing long enough to say, "I'm going to tell you a secret, okay kid?"

I nodded and held out my pinky. She wrapped her pinky around mine and shook it lightly.

"This might be a bombshell, might not, so heads up. I don't think it was ever really a secret, per se, but I never brought it up before. I never thought of myself being in the closet, but I also never thought I wasn't in the closet. It wasn't denial and it wasn't fear. I knew I really liked women, but it just never crossed my mind until college and I was walking to class one day when I realized "I like women." To make a long story short, I'd like to unofficially officially come out of that weird little cubby space and say that I'm gay."
